Summer's come and gone, not much happened.

Deviling came to me in mid-summer.  He was a bit disappointed that he'd not yet experienced the trial by fire traditional for a military dwarf.  He had no scars and no kills to his name.

"I apologize, Devling, I may have been hogging all the mortal danger to myself.  You'll get your chance, I will see to it."

Lucky for us, only a day later a giant earthworm and six troglodytes decided to summer in our fair city.

Followed by eight more troglodytes.

Too bad Devling was asleep, it was glorious.  Ever smashed a giant worm's brain out with a hammer? I have.

A newly arrived recruit fell to a troglodyte.  Kulet Vobokstir will be missed.  I call his socks.

Giant Toad, deceased.

Giant cave spider? Devling, here's your chance.  Drinking?! 

When he is done, he arms himself and I give him a head start before sending the rest of our military after him.  It is my hope he will injure the spider enough from a distance to make him easy prey for our melee fighters.  Devling arrives alone aside from his dog.  They fight bravely, the dog takes a bite to the head after dealing some significant damage.  Devling fires bolt after bolt into the spiders chitin.

The dog bleeds to death and the spider turns on Devling just as backup arrives.  This is the moment of truth, one false step and dwarfs will die.

Devling is bitten!  Back up arrives, the kill goes to TolyK.  We are now setting up a hospital area to tend Devling.

And Devling just suffocated.  I'm sorry

Program just crashed.  Thanks to some accidental save scumming, Devling lives!  Nothing's changed but the spider battle.

also, my brother wants to be in a reserve militia squad that you never call out. he wants to just hug his ballista and drink booze.

Because some people (like me) are so accustomed to the ASCII graphs that we can't understand tilesets.

I don't think he means that. He means why are different graphics save-breaking (partially).
The answer is because graphics packs use non-standard symbols for each creature, and those differ between tilesets.
