X3 TC and R
« on: February 05, 2011, 08:26:31 pm »

Since we all love DF, I would think atleast some of us have played X3 Terran Conflict and X3 Reunion. Pretty good games, but the pirates have an uber gun.

X2 was a huge time sink in my early days as university student. My desktop was running overnight so my Universal Trades and factories (mostly Solar Power Plants and Wheat Farms) could accumulate credits for me. The pride of my fleet was the Split Elephant, which I used as a poor man's carrier. In fact, I rarely touched my Destroyers because the Elephant was more manageable and agile when exploring unknown systems.

Then came X3 but my desktop was too old to run it well. I bought the X Superbox last month because I love the series so much but I have not had the time and rig to enjoy it.   :(

I do play X3 TC once in a while with heavily modified game and hell ived sink hour and hours in the game and still do. Vanilla its not that great but with the huge amount of mod and script you can install, its awesome.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

I love this game. I have an aviator's joystick from when I was going to be a pilot back before I realized how expensive that is, and it works really well. There are up/down/neutral switches that can be assigned to any of the 4 strafe directions so you can really juke around in a smaller craft.

It took me a really long time to build up very far in my first (normal background) game, with most of the time spent in the starter fighter. The second time after I had to re-install it I tried a Terran Fighter Pilot, and getting to a better ship was greatly simplified by the campaign award for that campaign. In addition the Terran designs and especially their weapons are quite a bit superior. With a little time and careful piloting, the Terran Corvette can take down max shielded Q's without missiles when the corvette is piloted by the player.

Also, if you are still scraping by in your starter fighter, keep an eye out for Duke's transporters. They are usually unescorted, start as hostile, and belong to what seemed to be a somewhat unimportant faction. They also bail out quite often when damaged. They ended up being the way I'd get my fleet of merchants started. I never reached the point of buying my own station, but I did have about ten small to mid sized merchant ships flying around.

I'd like to get a better computer to see how the fighting part fares. I was lagging in large fights and especially when multiple weapons and fighters were flying around; but my computer isn't very good. I haven't tried mods yet but I've heard good things. I would hope there would be mods that make the trading system even better. I know there are some that make the races more aggressive when another sends a force into their sectors. Supposedly this results in glorious capital ship battles that would make my computer honorably suicide.

I've gotten/am getting all of my ships off of the Paranid.  It's irritating how few of them don't feel as if luck they are.

Are there any big mods considered essential?  I'm still playing through my first game, and after finishing I'll probably mod it as much as possible.

Flying around in a non pimped Buster, with two Impulse Ray Emitters, getting missions to blow up random trade ships for 1000 credits. Which is to say, it's going really slow.

If you see them send a surrender message, make sure to stop shooting. They'll bail out and you can take their ship. It will come to a stop and be neutral. You'll have to bail out of your ship in your space suit and get close to your new acquisition. From the right lick menu there will be a new option, Claim, once you are close enough. Make sure that you tame the ship with Claim before you zap it with your healing laser (like a unicorn). Also I'd recommend waiting until you blow up everyone shooting at you.

You can even repair it back to full hull with your space suit laser, so that it will be useful. After that, either switch to that ship and haul goods around until you can outfit the cargo ship with the trade and navigation computers and stuff that will let you do purchases and navigate said purchases to a buyer. Speed and maneuverability upgrades should be the first priority, followed by cargo space before it starts getting very expensive.

After that, the hardest thing to do is to remember to send that ship around to buy and sell stuff. You probably won't lose very many, or at least not until they've paid themselves off.

Also, once in a while ships flying around with the cents symbol will offer to sell you their ship as they are buying a new one. The price seems to be random, with some asking dirt cheap prices for a ship that you can sell to the shipyard for several times what you paid after you've blasted it with repair laser for a minute or two. It's worth comming ships and stations with the c for cents symbol.

If you have a small, fast ship that can hold a few hundred cargo, consider space weed. Unfortunately, you will be lucky to find a Space weed factory that has produced enough to be able to sell it at a profit since a place to sell it usually is a Teleri space station, which only buys 40 units, or a Pirate base on the pirate infested sector bordering Xenon Hell 59 and just the other side of Argon Police Academy.

Basically, just buy whatever from whichever station is maxed out and can't produce any more, thus cut rate prices. However, be very careful of race specific goods in particular as you will be somewhat confined to that race's space until you offload the cargo.

A very easy and simple way to make money is in systems that are lucky enough to have an ore mine in the same system as a factory that uses ore, which is almost every non agricultural building. The thing about ore is that it's value is low while it's bulk and size is very high. This means NPC merchants often times will ignore even inter-sector trade. Since ore is produced quickly as long as there is energy (which you may be able to supply) you can make quite a few lucrative trips supplying the factories which will likely be unsupplied. However, bigger ships are better as you can sell more at once so that you fill up their demand. Then you won't need to settle for a lower the price for the next shipment.

This is unmodded by the way.

Personally, I cant play without one called "Mars", it gives additional function to drones, allowing you for example to recover stuff with them (instead if having to fly and run over the object). It also adds a new item that gives much better aim to turreted weapons. The drones also work more intelligently, avoinding enemy fire and working in coordination... plus it let's me feel im piloting a Nu-Gundam of sorts releasing funnels :p. Oh, and you can also use them as a defensive screen that shoots down incoming missiles.. it is just awesome to the eyes.

And if you're playing TC, Cadius' ship and station-pack is the way to go.

Back in my days, the Solar Power Plants were the most profitable factory for a beginner having fund only for one factory. I guess that's because everyone needs E-cells. While price is limited by the level of nearby competition, you would always get a steady amount of cash overtime. I think at least 50% of my factories (had around 8-12) were Solar Power Plants.

I always loved pirating my way up to 50mil then setting up a big trading empire.

Xtended Mod for X:TC was released last month. With a pretty awesome trailer. This mod was damn awesome in X3:R, so much so that Egosoft hired some of it's devs to work on X:TC. Of course, TC doesn't have all of the awesome stuff that XTM did.

They just go "We never surrender" then I have to kill them. Also, harriers with High Energy Plasma Throwers suck.

I loved X2 and X3:R , but never got too far on them.
Then I got X3:TC, and I still have it installed...I guess I haven't played it for almost a year, because I got tired of getting millions, building 3 complexes, configuring the 3 complexes, buying 9 traders (3 for each complex, or more), configuring 9 traders, repeat this after 2 hours on SETA.

I'm so sick of it I can't stand to play anymore, it's like trauma or something.
But the game is awesome and you can sink months if not years into playing it.
