I'm all for using .18 with no wood. We can always bring wood in via merchants! Hey... if all of our wood comes from elves then extra bonus points for corrupting the "pure" race.

besides, each new version is going to have unforseen bugs and consequences that don't exist right now.

without wood what can we do without beds, unless you could modify it so beds can be made from other things like ice or stone

i dont know because i dont do much modding of the game files...yet

Well that's easy, sleep in the dirt until we can buy wood. Until then, we can also use the current beds for a community dorm. What's more dwarfy?

If you're lacking in wood or  you ask for it, caravan's can supply you with as much wood as you'll ever need, baring wooden mega projects.

well I'm currently going without wood, just made 3 beds in a legendary dorm room  :P

caravan and liason came, I was writing up and update, saved, then my comp crashed (now fixing it - I'm stuck with a Pentium-III comp right now  :-\) so the game is saved but not any of my work ;(
...
I'm still alive though  :D

I'm all for sticking with the fort. There isn't anything actually wrong with the current fort, and the new version just seems like another shiny play thing. If we were starting a new fort, yeah I'd say use the new version, but I think we'd have just as much fun with the old version if we ever actually start the fort.
