Author Topic: Ghosts, I love em, now is there a way to edit them or turn em off?  (Read 4796 times)

Hi Folks

Long time reader, first time poster. :-X

I like ghosts, I even kept a fisher dwarf ghost as a pet. But as my fortress ages and hundreds of goblins die, dwarf caravan guards fall in my lava moat, etc, my un-removable ghost population rises.
And my FPS suffers. Now FPS is going to drop all by itself, but when the hoards of ghosts jump around, the game pauses and slows.
I am on a mega project and dont want to lose it to FPS death.

I have read extensively and searched the forums.

So the question, is there a way to edit them or turn em off?

Oh and i have all the other FPS saving tricks running (baths, getting rid of junk, using stone to reduce free areas with mini projects, eating all the kittens)
Thanks and sorry if this has been covered and I missed it. I will skip tonight's exceptional kitten roast as punishment.

Well of course, I have a chamber set aside for memorials.

I now have some 7 ghosts who are either burieds so deep in the long list i cant find em, or are in the un-named list due to being caravan guards.

Being able to make a slab for any intelligent creature or pet that's died, that list gets so long it's laughable.  A single ambush squad is ~7, at least for me, with 3 squads that's 21 dead goblins, which takes up two full pages of memorial listing.  Not to mention, if you use chained animal sentinels, those appear on the memorial list as " (engrave memorial)" with no name or classification, and race does not appear either, just names, so telling the difference between a dead goblin and a dead caravan guard can be nigh-impossible, especially with such outlandishly difficult names.

Memorials are good for new forts, or people with enough patience and a notepad, but an old fort that's seen bloodshed will suffer.  If I could turn off ghosts I'd be doing a lot more stuff with my dwarves.

IMO we need to have auto-assigned memorials, just like coffins. AKA, you tell the dwarves to engrave a slab, and they autopick a non-memorialized, non-buried target.

*Dwarf, target.  I'm not sure I have enough free time for my mason to worry about all those goblins.  I'd settle for a way to sort the list, and only show deaths from my civ and/or unmemorialized dead.  A sorting option for "active ghost" would be amazing.

... Dare I suggest actually trying to slab your way through all of them?

What happens if you blow up a memorial, anyway?  Do the ghosts re-haunt you?  You could slab all the goblins to get to the fortress guard, and then just remove the ones you're certain are goblins.

... Ah, wait, the wiki page says that slabs don't even work on caravan guards - only coffins will do.

Not to mention that making a slab doesn't remove it from the list.  I made a slab for my first Giant kill, and that Giant remained on the list of slab-ables afterwards.

Sometimes they do. I haven't figured out what makes the difference.

Maybe they demand a coffin if there's anything left to bury but will accept a slab if there isn't?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Does Runesmith's "delete" tag do anything to them? (This is assuming runesmith works with the current version, and ghosts show up on the list, and the delete tag does what I assume it does)

Yep.  A werewolf threw the outpost liaison into the river, and the resultant ghost settled for a slab.

Outpost Liaison and Caravan Guard are two different types of creatures.
