meeting area- cold?
« on: February 04, 2011, 02:01:27 pm »

I just embarked on a glacier, and when scraping out my ice cave, I set a meeting area to prevent any cases of frostbite. However, in the zones menu, when I selected the area I wanted, it displayed Cold. Does this actually change anything?

It means that the area is cold enough to cause frostbite, so you would do well to keep your dwarves away from that area. Dig all the way through the ice until you reach stone and you should be safe.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

5+ Z's below the surface is usually stone layer.  For my forts it's always 5 soil levels/ice and then stone, but I do play tailored forts so it may be tailored to 5 for me.

Apparently death via cold has been around since 40d.

I've never encountered this or had any problems with frostbite despite having a dwarf-dip at the entrance to my glacier fortress.  You'd think that sopping-wet dwarves walking around in freezing weather might have SOME issues, but I've never seen it.

I just loaded it up to see if I got a "cold" designation for making zones on icy areas, but I have yet to see this.  What do you have to do to get "cold" to appear as a designation?

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

Derailing this slightly: Do clothes help against temperature, or hurt?  Will naked dwarves suffer in glaciers, or will full-armored soldiers swelter in tropics?

I'm a fan of glacier embarks; yet the only casualties I've noticed from cold are the babies that insist on crawling around outside.

We refer to this as "Natural Selection"

It's probably bad that the kids' father was the Mayor, then.

They at least protect against cold.
