You kidding? the game practically floods you with effigies.
So then how come people are talking about being stuck with half health?

Because people are bad don't want to be stuck invadable since apparently the netcode is good so that actually happens more than once per three runs.

Unless I'm misunderstanding and dirk serls 2 doesn't work like that with human = invadable, I won't be able to find out 'til next month. PC master race is a bummer sometimes. :<

because the ring is in a box, very early in the game mind you, but in an out of the way place in front of a bonus boss. unless you know where it is or obsessively look everywhere like i do, you're not gonna find it. also, ring slotting is important. i wouldnt waste a valuable ring slot to that ring unless i was already at 50%

Aside from that, being rational is not only optional, but is frowned upon.  We hate elves.  We kill for socks.  We sacrifice nobles.  We love kobolds.

Sort of. You can be invaded regardless of how human you are, but the chance decreases as you hollow out.

Man, the boss battles in this game are a chore.
Also, just how the heck do you parry attacks? I always take damage when I try, I'm guessing it's a matter of timing?

You can't parry boss attacks (except the on the final boss) but you can parry pretty much all humanoid attackers, and yes, it is a matter of timing. Try just before their swing animation finishes.

I'll just have to keep practicing, then. :)

To parry, you generally have to make the parry action as the blow hits you.  In effect, you want to see your arm bash their blade out of the way as their blade is actually visually touching your arm.

I've never really tried parrying, but I've dabbled a bit, I'm more of a dodging person. It's easiest to practice on the weaker humanoids you find around undead burg where their attacks are pretty slow and predictable. You will probably screw up a lot though, their windup is so long you might get impatient and parry way too early, just try to wait until just before you think they're going to hit you.

By the way, if you didn't know already, you can parry barehanded, hehehe.

Being a barehanded, parrying flipper is quite fun. You'll have to use a lot of environmental kills, though.

To be honest, I was kind of disappointed when I found out that the key to winning basically the entire game was just to perfect your parry timing.

You can make it through the whole game without it. Dodging, blocking, and polearm kiting are also good strategies.

Oh, I almost forgot. There are a few shields (and I think one or two weapons) in the game that have a larger parrying window than normal, so if you have one of those it might be a good way to start. i think the target shield and parrying dagger are two of them, forget the others.

Also, fun fact: Scimitars can be used to parry in the left hand, as can rapiers.
But yeah, they kind of suck for it.
