Even if you do have the faith for it, why waste the slot for it?

You can re-slot things any time at a bonfire. If you're going to be farming, slot in Homeward and then unslot it when you're done. 18 Faith is also the benchmark for many of the useful miracles and faith items, so it could be worth your while.

I don't have multiplayer, so I don't worry about the "Don't go over 120 or you're effectively banned." For PvE, it seems, levels are as cheap as souls. When you're done with the stats for maxing the current character's specialty, you can afford to put levels into whatever else is useful.

If I were to get a Live membership, though, is there a level limit on leaving your summon sign to help with bosses?

A player can only see your summon sign if you're within 10%+10 levels higher or lower than him.

So, approximately 80-120 soul levels for my SL 96 mage?

Alright, finally beat the game today. The fight was going well, but then Gwyn started stunlocking me in a corner. He was about to kill me when Solaire came up and finished him off. Which was way cooler than the ending, which was disappointingly minimal.

Congrats dude!  Beating Gwyn is an accomplishment no matter what.  He's a real pain the first time around.  Sadly, there were a few encounters in the game that were really lacking and the devs have said themselves that they didn't like.  Bed of Chaos was one, and Gwyn was one.  Fairly anticlimactic if you ask me.  But still satisfying nonetheless.

Unless you parry all of his attacks, which trivializes the fight.

Or if you're a 50 int sorcerer. The whole thing lasted about 12 seconds. I was slashing him with Velka's rapier after blocking his attacks, then he turned his attention to Solaire, so I took the opportunity to fire off my soul spears. Then he swerved back around to me, started beating the crap out of me, and Solaire killed him just before he could kill me. God damn, crystal soul spear is overpowered.

Oh that's right, you don't have the expansion and have never seen pursuers.

It's still an accomplishment to be able to parry him.  It's not easy the first time through.

Someone who's never played Dark Souls before can parry Gwyn and win (once they figure out how to easily dodge his two attacks that can't be parried). It's not a respectful strategy. He's the final boss, and feels like it unless you parry him. It's right under shooting arrows at a stuck enemy.

Wait, they added even MORE powerful sorceries? My god, are mages really this broken?

Don't forget dark bead. You can do something like ~1600 damage with your magic damage buffed, not to mention its ultrafast cast speed. Abyss magic is the reason people hate mages.

The dark magic is overall a bit different. It doesn't deal magic damage and it's slower, so it's probably not as good for PvE. It's dreadful in PvP.
