Something to add if your using rapiers. The balder side sword looks like a rapier. Both use dex so switching between rapier and balder side sword is a good tactic.

Jeez, this game, which I bought because I heard you all being excited about it and it was on flash sale... this game is Suffering. But I swear I will cut out that **** demon's heart with that rusty spork of mine and it'll be glorious. I can't really name any other game where beating the first enemy of the game would be such an accomplishment for me. (Actually... MegaMari was damn hard too. But not to this extent)

Because right now I can only take off 1/12 of his life before succumbing and I've tried something like 10-15 times.

Is this before or after you get your weapons back?

Yeah, if you're still using the broken sword hilt... it's quite possible, but not intended for you to take out the first boss enemy with that.

Challenge accepted.

Wait, no. I'm not insane enough for that anymore. Time to backtrack.

Yep you're in for a treat, that boss is a cakewalk.  :P
If you took the black firebombs it should be possible to kill the demon before you get an actual weapon.

That's what I thought he originally meant before I remembered there was in fact as a boss-like-thing in the Asylum.

The first real boss, man, I probably spent 2 hours on that guy and horrifically over-leveled myself before I found a way to beat him. Fuck that guy.

Yeah, it's kinda amazing just how much this game relies on knowledge and skill over levels and equipment.  It probably took me about 20 hours to ring both bells first time round.  I managed it in under 90 minutes on my last run.

I challenge everyone here to a Level 1 run. I've gotten to Smough and Ornstein, and I'm close to beating them.

Plus there's the added challenge of actually getting back to the boss in decent shape to fight them. That first real boss, there are about 12+ guys between your last bonfire and him, and just getting to him with 100% life and all your Estus flasks can be challenging, as you're just starting the game and figuring out its quirks. Very few games make even the trash encounters an exercise in planning and execution...but Dark Souls does, and in some cases, TRIPLES down on that philosophy. (FU, Dark Root Garden.)

Challenge REJECTED.

On the topic of challenges I've felt like doing a true

I would if it were easier to get the ring. Can't take much damage at SL1; doubling the amount taken wouldn't change much.

I was trying out something new earlier,
Why do all Dex scaling weapons seem to do like, horrible damage?
