How in the ruddy fuck do I beat the black knight in the undead burg? I must just be crap at this, as everyone else seems to be managing it. I'm a pyromancer with a spear and wooden shield. No matter what I hit him with, it only ever takes off like 10hp whether he's blocking or not. I am unreasonably angry at this game

You don't have to face him yet...

If you are pyro, find openings to use the firespell.  No, it doesn't stun him, but it'll kill him fast if you can manage staying alive.  Try luring him out to where you fight the 3 hollows, so you'd have room to dodge and stuff.  About 6 or 7 should hit, then the rest can be done with a few well timed attacks.

A friend of mine climbed up a ladder and tossed firebombs down at him until he died.   

I managed to fight that one by keeping my distance and attacking after his big attacks.(after upgrading my weapon at a later blacksmith)  I can't seem to beat the second one at the top of a tower, but I haven't tried in a while.

I managed to nab a consumable that endows your weapon with electricity, ended up annihilating him in under 10 hits. Can't remember the item name or where I got it, glowing powder or some such. He's actually REALLY easy if A: you have a shield that doesn't suck up 95%+ of your stamina per block and B: can drag him to an open area, it's very easy to block, circle strafe around and backstab him. Same strategy applies to every one of those types I've seen.

Yep, some enemies are REALLY easy if you know how to pull them off.

Also enjoy the game now... it gets REALLY mean later on.

Update: DERRRPPP I completely missed the stairway up on to the wall every single time. Went up this time, and killed the bull demon thing on my second try. Shortbows are my friend. The sudden dragon-breath rape is not, however.

I actually quite enjoy losing on this game. It makes me frustrated, sure, but then I play Dwarf Fortress, the game you cannot win. Losing isn't a problem for me, you learn from your mistake.

Death isn't really a big issue in Dark Souls or even Demon Souls, as long as you spend your souls before you accrue a huge amount of them. And even then it's usually a loss you can live with. Dark souls improved the penalty with the way Humanity points work, but it's still not a horrible loss.

On that note, does anyone know what the benefit to being human vs hollow is, and/or if there is some extended penalty to dying as a human? (Not the humanity points, the actual using of points to become human)

The only thing I've noticed is that you can kindle fires(with humanity) when you are human.  This gives a lot more potions when you start from those fires.  I think you get a slightly higher item find rate as well.

You can get phantom invasions while you are human but now while you are a hallow, to my knowledge.

You get a higher item find rate, especially for rare items. This bonus increases the longer you are human. Also, kindling fires with humanity isn't the same as being human.

When you are alive, you can have other players in your world. Certain NPCs only show up when you're alive, or dead.
Humanity increases item drop rate (Not nearly as much as a certain ring, though.)
Certain weapons and pyromancies scale with your Humanity.
Humanity is used to level up in certain covenants.

Kindling a bonfire makes that bonfire permanently give you extra Estus Flasks when you rest at it. Also, whenever a bonfire is kindled, people connected to that bonfire on the same network will get an estus flask for free.
