> Paddle eastward

I was imagining the elf as female...  but to be honest, it's all the same for elves.  The fact he's a man makes it all the more humorous.

> Paddle eastward

You finally come upon the creature that was in pain.

Elf: It's beautiful!
Cleric: ... It's a bear.
Elf: If I could heal it...

The bear is swimming in the water. It's rather big.

Put it out of its misery. Then skin it. Unless there's another bear within 40 yards from here.

Elf needs a new, more useful familiar.

Not a bad idea...

No!
Elf could use it as a familiar!

While the elf doesn't answer you, he looks fairly confident. Jumping into the water, he manages to swim over to the big animal, and he heals it quite easily.

You now have a bear.

The bear grabs the rapier rope, allowing it to double as tugging line. You begin moving toward the other side of the room at a faster rate than before.

Continue following the wall until we reach a shore.

Continue following the wall until we reach a shore.
As you reach the end of the room, you notice the ceiling continue to rise until it's no longer visible. The other end of the room is what looks like an actual shore. The water slowly laps against a bank of grass. As you come to the shore, you see some trees in the distance. All of the plant life looks healthy aside from the fact that there is no light to speak of. It's as if the landscape was torn out of a natural reality and planted in the dungeon an hour ago. There doesn't seem to be any life around besides the bear.

> Ask the Elf.  "Was the snake your familiar, or do you just have some kinda fancy bond with animals?"

Elf: He was my companion. I can only bond with one animal at a time...

> Can you bond to the bear?

It's practical.  While attaching yourselves to things in a random dungeon, bears are powerful and useful.  Plus the elf is probably lonely.
