Applying gnomeblight?
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:44:59 pm »

So, digging through the raws, I discovered that gnomeblight is
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
.

Anyone know of a way to get it spread on the ground outside so I can actually make use of it?

  • Build weapon traps.
  • Hide weapon traps.
  • Dump gnomeblight where the weapon traps are.
  • Hope gnomes come.

Ha, I was afraid of that. No tricks for separating liquids from their barrels? Ah well. I'm sure a mechanic for it will make it in eventually.

Trap gnomes in cages. Build the cages in an enclosed area with a door at the entrance. hook all of the cages to a lever. Store the gnomeblight barrels in the gnome room. Forbid the liquid inside the barrels and have the barrels taken off to the trade depot. The liquid will be dumped on the ground when the barrel is picked up. Lock the door before you let the gnomes out of their cages so they can't escape.

As far as I know, the only way to separate the liquid contents of a barrel from the barrel itself is by first freezing them solid.  They turn into "globs" which can be handled by dwarves without the need of bucket or barrel.

Ha! As hilarious as that is, what I was hoping for was a way to dump the stuff in strategic places outside (e.g. at the outer gates) so that I could keep the darn things away without hauling cages, unjamming traps, sending military, and so on.

Ah. Too bad there's no way to freeze things on demand.

Use the tags alcohol does to explode then explode the barrels outside

LOL, that's do-able, but the funny part is that by the time I get things set up to get magma out to blow the barrels, I might as well just magma the gnomes too  :)

This. Just put the stockpile at the place you need it (for example, the main entrance) first.

Unfortunately this wouldn't work for me because I'm in a permanently frozen biome, so the frozen gnomeblight probably wouldn't affect them.

Alcohol doesn't explode. Alcohol never exploded. All it does is boil, and I don't think this is even harmful.

Can you dump the contents of a barrel? If so, will that let you pour it onto the ground?

When they grab your booze they just run off screen with it, not consume it right?

Not sure about the current version,
but in those version where I encountered gnomes,
they would stay at your booze stockpile and drink one barrel after the other,
until either the stockpile is empty, or they get successfully chased away/killed
(I have to add that these cases always happened in the first half year of my fortress,
when I still had my booze stockpiles outside of the tunnels and with just ~100 units of alcohol in them (and usual ~0 booze when my dwarves succeeded in killing the gnomes :D )...
it taught me, to put my booze underground as fast as possible, and since I do this I haven´t encountered a single gnome ambush anymore)

Gnomeblight comes in barrels? What happens if you lock a gnome in a room with 2 barrels, one with booze and the other with gnomeblight? Will he drink the booze only, or will he go for the gnomeblight also? I should have tried this in my last fort but didn't think to.

Also, it would explain how it's a sort of pesticide. Maybe gnomes can't read or recognize symbols that declare what is in the barrel is poison instead of alcohol, and maybe gnomeblight smells like alcohol to them or something.

Holy crap, I never thought of that -- will they try to drink it? I've gotta test this. Too bad I don't have any gnomes on my current embark. But, then, I'm about to re-gen with the new release.
