I'll take Altair
What the Kraahk could you find around Altair? Or are you going to do artificial habitats?

Artificial Habitats
'kay then. When I think about, a high-energy star like altair would be a good capital for an interstellar civ. Lots of power for big projects'n'such.

I'm trying to not answer that with a sarcastic 'No, Really? I never would have guessed!'

But, yeah, pretty much. But more efficient ones than we currently have.

EDIT: I'm out for today. Unless by chance I get access to a computer with internet access sometime tonight.

I was thinking of a bishop ring in orbit around Altair

Well, I can at least give you some interpretation of the facts about the stars.

Keep in mind, that the luminosity of a star does not matter that much.
You can have a planet close to a dim star, or a planet far away from a bright one, and get the same degree of habitability and irradiation.
Sure, you could technically get a planet very close to a bright giant, but then it would be totally uninhabitable.
The only things that differ, depending on the star type, are:
-the peak radiation wavelenght - bluer stars radiate more in harder(i.e. ->gamma) wavelenghts, redder ones in infrared. So, considering three stars with the same total luminosity, and planets at the same distance from each - the blue one would be more dangerous to Earth-like life than the other two, the yellow one would be brighter, the red one would warm the planet more.
-orbital period of a planet in a habitable zone. The dimmer a star, the closer the zone, the shorter the period.
-age of the system. Blue and white stars are generally too young to allow for life(as we know it) to evolve.
-heavy elements abundance. Varies, and is not as simple to graph vs the stellar type. Still, if you want a "homeworld" type of system, where some intelligent life evolved, you'd rather look for a star rich in heavy elements - unless your lifeform manages to do without, somehow. Also, allows for more/bigger planets to form.

Why? What can be cuter than a horde of alien locusts, all claws and teeth and chitin plate, with the single purpose of killing and eating everything in sight?

I guess I'd be interested, but I don't really know what I'd bring to the table besides a passion for hard sci fi and a propensity to do the research.

That's a more than most sci-fi writers are willing to do. If anything, an extra pair of eyes to look over the pseudo-technical mumbo-jumbo is more than welcome.

Agreed. People always tell me I have the mind of a writer. Because I research things in detail and have a vivid and wild imagination at times. If my literary skills wern't so poor i'd probably work on it. Mainiac seems similar, and he's provided good ideas in detail for my Mission to Mars game.

Some people have religion.  I have the belief that a lunar settlement is going to usher in an age of utopia in O'Neil Cylinders.

Since mainiac already joined and just hasn't been added to the list, I probably won't be able to contribute. If you want another pair of semi-skilled hands, then I'm here. I pretty much bring the same things to the table as mainiac, only some microbiology thrown in.
