Lol @ all Sappho's specialities.

I still dun get it.
Having a tiny 'nid brain that only goes "Rend! Claw! Bite!" is not conductive to subtlety.

Il Palazzo is mainiac-like, with respect to SF-hardness.
He says:
Be mainiac-like too. Every Tolkien and Lucas can be SF-soft, you can do better.
Here, use this sources to improve your hardness(hurrdurr he said "hardness"):
A 100 of the 122 stars within 25 ly radius from Sol
Click on a star name, to get a detailed information, including stellar data, known planets, "points of interest", predicted "goldilocks zone", and more.

The main site from which you can look for stars by name, coordinates, catalogue, asc/dec, as far as 75ly away.

This site contains more links to various catalogues of stars, including Gliese.

When building planetary systems, keep in mind that if the system has got confirmed Jupiter-type planets, then it's quite possible that there are also Earth-like space rocks, only as of yet undetectable.

As far as I'm concerned, STL travel does not mean that there can be no empires. Read Forever War by Heinlein, or Hainish cycle of novels by LeGuin to see how they handled it.

Communication across vast distances is a more pressing problem. Either you'll get a magickal gizmo that can send and receive information faster than light(some hokus-pokus tachyon stuff), or you need to invent some system that keeps the empires working despite the communication lag(totalitarian military state, theocratic fanaticism, single-minded aliens etc).

Not at the level you guys have, I do have a few ideas sociologically and economically and bit of understanding of both.

I'll but you down as 'jack-of-all-trades', and list those two as minor specializations

single-minded aliens
*'nids come in through the vents. omnomnomnom.*

Many thanks for the links, but we've just got board size for now. We haven't even managed to decide the game rules entirely, let alone what the playing pieces are. Where they end up on the board is waay away for now.

Depends. I'm only interested in astronomy, and regarding that subject, all the data you need is on the net(the links I gave you).
So I'm not sure what else I could contribute.
I might join later, when the goals and tasks become more concrete.
