I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing a collaborative hard science fiction worldbuilding project. I was thinking a 25-lightyear radius bubble centered on Sol.

Anybody interested?

*facepalm* and so it begins...[/sarcasm]

And, more on topic: Do you think it should be a crowded 'verse (Intelligent alien life is insanely common), a 'normal' 'verse (Intelligent alien life is moderately common), a sparse 'verse (Intelligent alien life is somewhat rare), or a lonely 'verse (humanity is all alone.)?

Do you mean something like a Dyson Sphere? Because, that won't work for a variety of reasons, not the least among them being that 25 light years would have other star systems contained in the bubble.

No, when I typed '25-lightyear bubble', I was saying how big the setting is. As in, only coming up with systems and such for stars within twenty-five lightyears of sol. I'm well aware that the Dyson Shell concept wouldn't really work, anyways.

No, I don't think he meant a Dyson Sphere!
I think he actually meant a thriving intersolar community.

Though, I'm going to have to press you for moar details, Vorthon!
I probably wouldn't mind trying to think up a planet or two.
...Perhaps a binary system, housing a Dyson Sphere. Bwahaha.

Hard (or at least hard-ish; what fun is it if you'll just end up making a science essay for school?) sci-fi is the only general rule. If it won't immediately and messily implode on itself in real-life, by all means put it in.

Edit: Grammar error due to rephrasing.

Shell (I.E., not fitting into the setting) or swarm? And like I've said, it's a hard sci-fi project.

On a more general note: I've gotten SE's opinion, and I would like your opinion on his opinion.

He suggested about 3-5 species, counting humanity. What do you guys think?

Also: I call one of the alien species! And Tau Ceti and 82 Eridani!

That seems reasonably fair.

But, once the setting is complete, what are you going to use the information for?
Unfortunately, I already have something similar to work on, so unless this is moving on towards something snazzy, I'll just have to watch. :(

...Also! 3-5 seems perfectly fine, but I wouldn't say that 7-10 should be ruled out if there's that much interest in making new creatures!

We're gonna sell it to Relic Entertainment for a decent wad of cash. (but you didn't hear if from me.)
 :P

In all honesty, tho, anything goes. Rp, writing fiction stories, whatever. It's a lot easier to make things when the building blocks are already there. Why do you think fanfics are so many compared to original works?

Because you don't have to build everything from scratch.

Well, I was thinking of starting a forum RP in the setting after we're done. But that won't be for a while, considering we've got ~200 stars to tackle (Although most of them are M-class main sequence dwarfs which {at best!} would just have debris belts, so that will probably cut it down a bit.)

Okay, I dunno how active I can be for a Forum RP, but I can sure as heck throw some basic ideas together.

Challenge accepted.
Dibs on some of those M-class dwarves!

It's only one possibility for the how the setting could be used. We could also go the OA route and use it as the basis for stories.

And define 'some'.

When/how will this start? will people randomly start convulsing and out spews a planet and its inhabitants? or do we have some organised format?
