Just out of curiosity. Can a thief steal an entire bin full of stuff in one go?

Nope, thieves avoid chunky items, like furniture, barrels and bins. They also avoid worthless garbage, like stone.

Will they steal things inside a bin?

IIRC by default you cannot build bins out of rocks.

No, not a bin made of lignite.

Don't know about kobolds, but raccoons or monkeys will occasionally steal bricks of coke or charcoal.

A bin made of metal, with flaming lignite in it. A metal bin is not destroyed by fire, and the lignite never burns away or gets extinguished.
The bin only prevents it from being extinguished by water - over the course of 9-10 months, the flammable material inside the bin will deteriorate (‼xitemx‼, ‼XitemX‼, ‼XXitemXX‼) and eventually vanish completely. The only way it'll burn forever is if the burning item is an artifact, since artifacts are supposedly immune to being damaged.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The mental image accompanying "A rhesus macaque has stolen a coke!" makes me chuckle as well.

Stupid elves, stealing all that magma we dumped on them... We could've used that to kill goblins! You call yourself eco-friendly.. but what about geo-friendly? Huh!?

Although, if we're eventually able to put magma in magma-proof buckets, then it's entirely possible that a thief might steal one. ( Joke's on him when he gets back home and shows the others the bucket of cooled magma he hauled all the way back to the kobold cave. Have fun with your bucket of solid rock, morons! )

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard

But it'll be obsidian by then! A bucket-moulded piece of obsidian, with an x3 value modifier, is a rather valuable thing! I'd say it's more valuable that this dolomite scepter that a kobold stole from me once!
