ooooh, I just had an idea. Could the extinct black hole builders be post-singularity humans? This would require having either 0 or very few humans left.

A species of creatures who look exactly like what you fear thanks to a smelless invisable gas they constantly excrete through their pores, but are peaceful in general, but also tribal. They have acsess to a pocket dimension called "The Nightmare", using teleporters they found, which they use as a combo of a proving ground and a place to exploit for stuff in it.

The Remnants: Massive space titans floating through space. Inactive except for when someone or something tries to breach them / knocks into them, in which case they use overwhelming force to destroy the irritating buggers.

If we have humans as a core species, I know how to fit these in and I have suggestions for humanity's growth to the stars. Otherwise, might as well leave it vague.

Okay, so. FTL. The universe needs to be self consistent, but it doesn't need to follow our laws of physics. How does it work here?

I'd be interested in contributing. I've had a space empire idea stuck in my head for a while, and want to write it down. (A big empire, though not necessarily powerful - very decentralized, with planets/princes of the Empire independent in all but name. Sort of Holy Roman Empire-esque.)

I suggest we do something that makes no sense but is massively awesome.

How about a particle drive that shoots out charged atoms? The mass of the particles forces the ship forward. In order to stop, it (somehow) drags particles back into the ship.

We could have a few FTL ship drives, to be honest. It doesn't need to have a single engineering concept.
