Is all culture just going to be a carbon-copy of Earth's? What kind of religion is appropiate?

Oh, and is there going to be some kind of galactic governing body?

Well, that's what we need to establish. I'd like to get a group of people registered to start a discussion on the starting point for the galaxy.

I was thinking of it like this - we have a present day. Everything prior to this is history, anything PAST this cannot be written yet. So we flesh out the galaxy as it is. Most writing would be 'history'.

Once we reach a certain point, we can advance the time line.

As for where we stand - I do like the idea of some sort of galactic mass near-extinction event, maybe a thousand years ago. (Fits into nbonaparte's humans being an extinct or near extinct 'elder race') The past hundred years or so maybe - species have been rediscovering interstellar travel due to artifacts.

But once we get a few more people who are ready to go on this, I'll set up a discussion thread on the Wiki to figure out how we're doing that exactly. But either way, any sort of race/species you want should be fine. Religions - that's fine, just please no Cult of Cthulu or anything. Culture - pretty much anything your imagination can come up with.

I think what we really need to discuss before we start going in earnest is:
1) Physics of this galaxy (FTL, FTL Comms, etc)
2) Magic/Biotech/Nanotech
3) Current state of the galaxy and some essential galactic events in the past as a framework

Updating first post with list of contributors. (I also realized I've been putting 'soap' in place of 'space' sometimes - lmao, whoops)

We could go with biotech like in Deus Ex, people start opt-in for body augmentation.

I would go with magic really. Or magic-like technology. That would be fine by me.

I don't think it's necessary to pin ourselves on one technology. We didn't suddenly stop developing metals when we discovered plastics either.

Nope, not at all. Was just talking about the debate around will there be 'magic', and if so, will it be genuinely mystical, biological, biotech, or nanotech. As you said earlier, the more defined we have the technologies we use, the better... easier to suspend disbelief.

Although I don't think throwing ideas back and forth back and forth on this thread (although it is good to brainstorm) will settle anything. I'd rather completely flesh out these discussions on the wiki where a discussion can be dedicated to each topic.

An easy way to approach it would be 'will there be?' 'yes or no'. Then as it comes up in the future it's decided on then. We probably don't want a race of super-wizards that can move planets around with their minds... regardless of 'how'.

Edit: What I'm saying is to get serious discussion and decisions rolling, sign up on the wiki and PM me. Once we get some more people - we'll get that rolling. Just some basic architecture for the galaxy.

Nanotech sounds interesting, we might be seeing post-singularity AI comprised of nanobots.

I'm voting for "no alive post singularity AI during the time that this is set".

Except under the conditions that the race minds their own business and doesn't bother with other civilizations beyond what is necessary.

No galaxy-conquering species or race apart from mine. And even then it's debatable whether they will attempt it. Oh, and if there are going to be discussions on the wiki, can you post a link here.

Okay, by no galaxy-conquering species I meant as in 'extermination of all other species'. Religious warfare is cool with me as long as it is a believeable religion. No two-bit cults.

Don't worry, they're not going to do that (Extermination), though you could've made it clearer
