It has kept me from boredom, many times.

DF is a great game, and I'm a gamer.  If I was not playing DF, I'd be playing something else, but I wouldn't be having as much fun.

Honestly?  Getting the GPA I want in school.  There is a very clear inverse correlation between the amount of time I play DF each semester and the GPA I get.
