^They only "respawn" in that defeating one ambush of them (which I think is usually 3-6) will only prevent another one until the next night. They can teleport if you try to run away.
Ah. I misunderstood.
Cool.

When your skills\gear increase they become little more than a annoyance, and I am talking about the bare minimum, iron whip and iron\bronze armour.

Or remember to pump strength so that you can knock them down and then bite their hands\legs off.

Seriously, biting of body parts is so effective it is hilarious (bogeymen are small sized)

I deal them by wearing very little armor and no weapons, and then I grab them and punch them in the face until they die. Works every time.

Boogies are easy if you're an axedorf

Clowns are the clowns of Adventure mode.

Before I tried getting kobolds to work (who, by the way are even greater woobies now because night creatures mean no cave is safe, and they can't sleep in houses because peasants hate you) I was a human demigod swordsman. First time I saw bogeyman. Killed one or two, but then I realised how many there were so I legged it.

Would've been ok if they hadn't torn out my eyes...

I don't think bogeymen are easy to kill... especially early in the game. For the record, I'm playing 'vanilla' DF Adventure Mode as a 'hero'. Obviously, it's easier if you start as 'demigod' (or mod the game).

a> I'm not sure they are too powerful. They are supposed to be a menace and feared.

Even when I am sleeping, they usually wake me before the fight begins. Once they start chasing, they are hard to outrun.

b> My suggestions: Avoid them (at least, until you are more powerful). Travel with companions or stay close to towns, so you don't have to travel alone at night. If you are going to kill a monster in a cave, you can sleep in the cave until sunrise. They won't attack you if you're not alone or if you go into a lair. You can even lead them into an enemy camp and get them to fight, if you are near one.

All you need to keep Bogeymen away is two comrades in arms, they seem to be afraid of groups of three or more, go to the nearest fortress and recruit two friends, problem solved.

You actually only need one companion, but my companions tend to get their skulls kicked through their brains by random wildlife, so it's good to have a backup.

The key is to never sleep at night in the open. I always sleep during the day and stay alert at night.

Also as a dwarf you will be outnumbered enough to nearly always trance and then they are easy sauce. The key is to keep high speed and run around a bit until they get spread out then fight one at a time. Just like in any other battle. It's not really that hard.

After you get into a martial trance, you can usually one shot bogeymen by attacking their head, even if it is a difficult strike.

if you're legendary in a weapon skill, you can hit most difficult shots regardless.

The trick to fighting bogeymen, I find, is to kite them. Run until you can attack one without being swarmed by the others. Don't aim attacks, as any attack will do. They bleed out fast if you manage to cut off a limb or hit an artery. You can easily outlast them, even as a peasant. Unless you're really slow.

Pff... Just be a great axeman and dodger and you may be able to fend them off (strong and agile too)
Doesn't work.
Neither do caves, which makes me wonder how that troglodyte managed to sleep at night.

They arn't impossible but there are some requirements

You MUST have at least 1600 speed or else they will swarm all over you

You must be fully armored

Now as for weapons, slashing is good and bashing not so much.

Oddly enough I found their mortal weakness... Biting their hands. You can rip them right off.

Strategy wise you want to fight each one, 1 on 1 and injure it while dancing around the others.

When I beat my first Boogyman group I had 1800 speed so it helped.

Personally I don't think Bogeymen exist, I think they represent the natural drive of insanity when all alone.

So then I claw my own eyes out at night from loneliness?

Maybe if they were more mischievous, like stealing your things and pushing you into pools, tripping you, climbing on your head, dragging you up on top of a tree or something, than purely aggressive then they'd be more of an entertaining nuisance than the absolute terror they are now. They do drive me insane whenever they end up making all the lucky shots and tearing off a limb or punching me in the face the first round.
