That... those things were popularized by the honor harrington books, weren't they? Least that's the thing I recall that concept (missiles that fly out and then fire lasers) being referenced to the most.
I remember them mainly from the Starfire books and the tabletop game of the same name.

David Weber who wrote the Honor Harrington books also helped design the Stafire game and co-authored the first few Starfire books.

Update's out!
Beat me to it. Just finished going through the tutorial system (again), since it's been long enough that I don't remember what the hell I'm doing.

Haven't seen anything new yet (that I've noticed, anyway), although having only just left the very first system, that's no real surprise.

I'm gonna try it out tomorrow, but I've seen a couple of bits on the subreddit.

I found an interesting bug.

Using a Legion XIV, opened up the information menu for an enemy ship and all my fighters spontaneously exploded.

A hotfix got released this morning that fixes a bunch of bugs, might want to redownload and see if that one got fixed too.

I’m pretty sure I’ve posted almost this exact same message before, but I just can’t seem to get out of boom-and-bust cycles in this game. I’ll build up a couple hundred thousand credits doing some missions, trading, and/or raiding, maybe salvage or buy some decent ships… then *wham* I either underestimate how tough a mission will be, or I just run into something nasty, and suddenly everything’s exploding.

I’m almost certain that it’s a “get gud” skill issue on my part, but it does start to wear on me.

My cash cows are the bounties where pirates are attacking a system and you get ~1400 per ship you destroy. Massacre the junk ships pirates have and sell the salvage. Use other ships and stations as shields.

Do some opportunistic trading when you see a high/low price (and remember that pirate black markets are a good way to avoid tax).

My favorite ship is the hammerhead. Wait for an enemy to get a little too cocky, a little too out of position, and then just throw all your firepower into them.

And just save scum the hell out of the game, because sometimes the AI on your team is suicidal or wants you dead and will throw the game.

When I play I normally do a bit of fighting and exploring, but for the most part I keep my most valuable ships mothballed unless I really need them and make money smuggling. You can make an absolute shit ton of cash smuggling various things to and from the pirate systems, since their trade network is basically completely fucked. Once I've gotten a decent amount of starting cash I escape the boom bust cycle you're talking about by making a colony, they take a decent amount of cash to get started but once they do they basically just print unlimited cash for you. Once you've got your colony up and running you'll have basically infinite money to do whatever you want with.

Bear in mind you'll want at least a million credits (probably more) before starting a colony, unless you luck out and find some perfect Terran world not too far from the core. Most colonies will be moneysinks until they can build up their infrastructure and population some; the buildings start at around 100k each but rapidly get more expensive, incentives to bring immigrants in tend to be pricey based on hazard rating, and even with open ports your accessibility (and therefore trade) will start low.

The bright side is free storage for all of your stuff, and yeah once they're established colonies will tend to churn out wealth that goes directly into your wallet. But it usually takes some time.

Basically if you start a colony too early, especially on a somewhat more marginal planet, you may instead hemorrhage funds until you can't even afford to pay your operating expenses. At that point you're stuck in a degrading fleet with 0 credits in your account and no way to improve your colony.

Same here. It's why I never play ironman anymore. As much as like the general concept of rebuilding after a setback, it's just too tedious in practice.

Yeah, Starsector is one of those games where things can just go too pear-shaped too quickly for me to play it ironman. Though I only reload if it was something out of the blue, or occasionally if I just want to play out a really hard fight that I know I should retreat from.

My personal favorite way of making money is to build up an exploration fleet and just search everything I can (safely). Avoid the harder warning beacon systems and take all the exploration missions I think I can complete on a loop out and back. I earn money, find potential colony planets, and often get blueprints or colony items I'll want for later on.
