No change. Same error message, same crash on startup.

Also tried updating graphics drivers with no change.

Try a full delete/uninstall and reinstall? Quick pokearound suggests the problem is caused by something in the program's code, rather than something on your end (such as it were), which would imply something screwy happened to your instance of the program -- corruption, unintentional file overwrite or lack of intended one, stuff like that. Other than checking to see what the specific code of the error points is and giving a go at fixing it from that end, a clean install with the latest version is probably your best bet.

E: Could also try running from the .bat inside the starsector-core folder instead of the launcher/.exe, maybe.

E2: There's also a .log file inside that folder you might look at for more information. Pretty sure it would tell you (more or less) what the program was trying to do before erroring out, which can help narrow down exactly what's going wrong and what potential fixes are.

... lastly, asking on the main starsector forum is probably a good idea, heh. Can't remember if the dev comes by here occasionally or not, but they're almost certainly your best bet for figuring out what to do.

A tip, because I had similar trouble with mine (though it was a different error).

There's a 'jre' folder in the game folder. Overwrite that with a Java 7 install. (It may be wise to have a backup just in case this doesn't work, of course.)

Make sure that you use Java 7, it's the version the game is built on and it won't let you use the current version unless you fiddle around in settings I don't know how to access.

Back to the Mora for me I think. Despite the heavy crew requirement, it's value as a tank is much higher than I thought with my falcon just not able to deal enough damage to justify approximately half the armor class.

Okay, first things first, let's make sure we're diagnosing the right problem.

1. Go to Fractal Softworks/Starsector/starsector-core
2. Open starsector.log and scroll to the bottom.
3. If there's any form of out of memory error, then the problem is easily fixable, and you should proceed to step four. If not, please spoiler post the contents of your .log file to me.
4. Assuming you have an out of memory error, go here and download the JRE 64bit that is appropriate for your machine.
5. Install and unpack the java you just installed.
6. Navigate to the java7 directory (probably something like C:\Program Files\Java) and copy the folder named jre7.
7. Navigate to your Softworks/Starsector/ directory. Paste the file you just copied here.
8. Now, there should be two folders called jre* in this directory. jre7, which you just copied here, and just named jre. Rename jre to jre_old. Rename jre7 to jre.
9. In the same folder as the two jre files, there is a file called vmparams. Open it with notepad.
10. In vmparams, there is a segment that says something like -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m. Change this to -Xms2048m -Xmx4096m.

Make sure you save the vmparams file, close you notepad window, and then run Starsector. Everything should go smooth.

Also, do you guys have any recommended mods?
First, setup your 64bit java and vmparams, otherwise it will crash.
Next, get Lazylib. It is required. Get Graphicslib as well since you'll probably need it for one mod or another, but if its too fancy for your computer it has a config file to disable sections for compatibility. Theres a few useful utility mods like Version Checker and Autosave and Combat Radar, and neat ones like Leading Pip and Combat Chatter.

Then, just get all the factions that sound fun. Basically all of them are good in some way, although a lot of them are waiting for .81.

Pwnzerfaust, are you using the most recent version? That sounds like either this or a 'Graphicslib is missing' error if you have mods that need it.

Also forsaken, it does not. The game will literally tell you that, if the current Starsector/jre folder is 64-bit Java 8, that it is not reccomended, you may run into strange crashes, and that you must either disable this message in the config or replace the jre folder with a 64-bit Java 7 one.

I tried this version for a bit, and smuggling seems a lot less profitable. I've barely seen any procurement missions for smuggling drugs, organs, or weapons, which was where most of the big money was. It's still moderately profitable to buy organs on a large criminal planet and sell them to wherever there's a decent price, but now I regret investing in the sensor skill for reduced detection. The lack of smuggling missions also makes it a lot more difficult to gain relations with pirates, something I've always enjoyed doing.

I also tried exacerbating a food shortage by ambushing relief convoys, but that wasn't worth a damn. The base food price is so low that getting a double return isn't even profitable without a massive quantity sold (at which point the price drops), and in this case the shortage ended without a convoy arriving (presumably other traders sold food instead). Maybe doing it with a larger population that's more isolated and targeting other convoys with food could make it worth it.

I also really dislike the new skill system. It's suffering from EU4 syndrome now, forcing the player to waste time getting things that are useless to them to get what they want. I read the dev's justification for it, that it increases the costs of "must-have" skills, but I don't think the change was an improvement in any respect.

Still, great version. The stage should be pretty much set for creating your own faction with fleets and outposts, anyway.

I like the skill system because its simple and self explanatory.  The old one was slightly bloated.

Smuggling doesn't seem profitable at all in this version.  The authorities seem a lot more aggressive about shutting it down, moving between systems is expensive, and massive price fluctuations seem pretty rare.  Plus pirates are still pretty good at ambushing, if nothing else sometimes with sustained burn I'll crash right into them without seeing them.

There's also the issue that exploring planets can be a lot more profitable with a similar fleet.  Hopefully when a planet's characteristics actually mean something survey data will go down in price and then it will be something we have the option of buying as well as selling.

Updoot, I install a bunch of utility mods with no problems on Mac. Also, armor is perhaps the bane of  my existence. I make bank off of big battles, but damn... the Mora just absorbs damage. I had to spend like 50 supplies to repair my fleet afterwards!

With organs it's like a guaranteed 50%-100% profit margin (not including supplies/fuel) if you buy on Chicomoztoc or another major criminal planet and sell to places you know have high demand at 500+ price. I installed comm sniffers in every system I've visited, which I think makes price updates more frequent (I hope so, anyway), and there's pretty much always somewhere facing an organ shortage.

Still, my chief complaint with smuggling is that it's a lot more boring than it used to be. The missions with their time limits and varied destinations and goods were definitely a lot more fun than schlepping organs around similar routes. I've only ever bought drugs and guns if I happen to know I can make a profit in-system.

One funny thing I've noticed with procurement missions is that sometimes the thing they're asking for can be bought on the destination planet anyway at a lower price than they offer. Or at least it may be available on the black market, I'm not sure about the legal market.

Procurement missions seem to be really annoying to handle, and the time limits are pretty strict for the easy ones.
