Oh christ, hyperions are irritating since the combat abilities update. I could see a fleet with every ship being controlled by humans actually being able to beat one, but even so, I think the phase jump thing needs to be gimped.

I think what bothered many people about this update, including myself at first, is that old tricks to rush into a large fleet were no longer viable with the supply changes. My strategy was always to get a venture as soon as possible, and then a bunch of wasps and broadswords to do most of the work against small fleets while I save for an Apogee. But between the supply restrictions (expensive supplies and being horribly imbalanced against fighters, but hopefully liable to change) and stricter early requirements for logistics skill, it's difficult/impossible to actually succeed with a shoestring cruiser fleet.

Personally, I've always hated the beginning of the game, and would prefer the option to start as a larger fleet to skip the worst of it (thank god for savegame editing). It's not that frigates are particularly bad, it's just really annoying to have to spend time pinging at pirate buffalos before the real game starts. I've never digged having frigates in a fleet, since they're so liable to die quickly against large and powerful fleets without babysitting, though admittedly I haven't used one in a fleet for years, so maybe that's changed.

Here's a great starter campaign: player is a captain in an AI controlled fleet.  The player doesn't have to worry about supplies, fuel, or, to some degree, hulls.  As the player levels up, he gets access to bigger/better ships in the fleet and rank to command a wing.  The player gains control of the main fleet and is introduced to CR, fuel, supplies, and crew when he hits level 35 or something.

In the interest of promoting hype for people who own this, but are tired of the main game, I'd highly recommend Uomoz' Sector.  All the mods in this compilation are great.  Exigency was recently added to his compilation, as was the Voidwalker faction.  Exigency are armor-only missile ships with repulsor fields.  The Voidwalker's fleet composition is determined by the player.

the slowness of updates i think is leading to loss of interest in this game plus a lack of promotion but really he should be pumping out weekly updates rather than 6 weekly, getting this game out of beta into out there status might attract attention from the likes of steam greenlight as it is , it risks slipping into obsecurity

Hear ya. I bought it some time ago and visible progress was made but otherwise... i just wait for it to reach a more "gamey" state.

I think getting all the star systems in factions in should be his next step rather than more combat chnages

Yeah, development is really slow. I remember buying this almost off the bat after trying it, but then the planned release was 2011 (check the OP). It is now basically 2014 ;)

Most interesting is a new carrier, with two flight decks. Also a bigger hound and shuttle, and a defensive brawler.

Er, wasn't the Brawler already a sort of defensive ship given it can barely cover its rear and everything is pointed forwards?

I'd imagine the Monitor has some kind of armor enhancement ability as well, so it's suitably different I think. I've never played a Brawler though, and can't remember if I've even fought against one, so I'm not sure.

Having had Brawlers in my navy and watched the AI use them many times in simulator, I'd say very strongly that it's defensive. It absolutely needs to take a defensive stance and fire at range. It is too slow, too weak, and no rear defenses to go ahead of the fleet's main body in offense. If it gets caught alone by a destroyer, or two frigates, or by a couple fighter wings, it will die very fast.

Theoretically, you could use the ship in offense successfully, but I'd have no idea what kind of setup you'd need to not have the AI screw up and die.

Edit: Actually, on proper testing, it can stand up to a single destroyer.

It still dies remarkably quickly to two Lashers though, and it has more difficulty with killing fighters than most frigates.

The brawlers whole design plan is a frigate that punches above its weight class. Its not an all around ship for sure. But throw a couple of them at a larger ship and they can put out some decent fireworks. Definitely needs cover from hunter frigates or fighters though.

Brawler isn't too great solo, but it does a decent job supporting a larger fleet.

I like the idea of trading being opportunistic rather than spreadsheetistic. Also, it'll require many more systems, meaning the game should get much larger in the next update.
