That's already in the game, though I forget the buttons you press to do it. You do something like that with tach lances already. Dunno about other stuff.

Welll... the Fairy mod has one.
It's a battle carrier with a long range plasma/laser cannon thing.

And there are various long range siege cannons too.

The plasma siege starship from AI war is literally a gun with a frame, though. Its slow, it shoots aoes, and it really annoys forcefield-covered units.

Sort of reminds me of Homeworld Ion Cannon frigates; it isn't a ship with a gun, it's a gun with a ship built around it.

Becoming even more impatient.  We're getting multiple systems and FTL in the next patch too, in addition to fighter changes, CR, battle mechanics, new logistic mechanics, and loads of moddding tools.  He's really bringing the game up to .6a status when he releases this patch.

It's been quite a while since a blog post, glad to see development hasn't stalled.

It talks about hyperspace, fuel, getting screwed over in deep space, etc. What Rez said. Looking forward to this patch, and perhaps more what modders can make with the travel system.

Honestly I was quite satisfied with this project for a very long time.  Frequent updates, regular blog posts, real and measurable progress being made, etc.  Perhaps its due to the scope of this update but it seems to have lost the laser focus that gave the project momentum.  Small goals that were regularly achieved without much feature creep or focus drift.

Hope it returns to that model soon.

And you can hear shield impacts over armor sounds, which seems pretty nice.
