And a namechange. Starfarer is now Starsector.

I have seen no explanations thus far besides:
Wait, what? Yep, you read it right. For Business Reasons, we’re changing the name of the game to Starsector. All I can say about it is this will not have any impact on how things proceed around here – these things happen to projects from time to time, and I hope that everyone will be on board with the change.

If I had to guess, I'd say there was some kind of trademark issue, but I haven't been able to find anything else called "Starfarer" (though I didn't look very hard).

Why the namechange?

The official response is "Business reasons".

"Sector" singular? That does not bode well.

Looks like I'm not the only one reminded of Weird Worlds here. Although "Starsectors" does sound redundant.

Maybe something to do with this: http://www.starfarer.com/ ?

Not sure what's up with THAT, but it's the only other thing I've seen that shares the name (Well, other than http://www.starfarer.net/, but that's just a fan site for an old rock band with an unrelated name).

I'm not a big fan of the new name. I mean, Star Sector? Really? Starfarer was nice - like seafarer but of the stars, or a play on wayfarer. Starsector is just... lame. I can think of at least a dozen words to go along with Star better than Starsector. Heck, I'll do that:

Stardancer
Starnomad
Stardrifter
Startrotter
Starvagrant
Starwalker
Starpass
Starrustler
Starglider
Starcruiser
Starjaunt
Starloafer

But regardless of the name, it won't stop me playing it.

I bet there will be another name change down the line. This name feels...generic.

It would certainly help, Noctis. Starsector sounds more like the name of an area ingame (either here or elsewhere), not entierly great as a title. Starglider is rather unique I think.

"Sector" singular? That does not bode well.

I think the name change might not mean that the game will be limited only to one system though. I've heard from Alex that part of the setting behind the game is that the sector in starfarer (other systems included) were cut off from the rest of the jump gates. The sector in the lore has always been mentioned to be the systems in the general vicinity of the jump gate, so I don't think they're limiting themselves to one system.

Me I don't think the name sounds any worse or better then starfarer (and I think it sounds way better then a lot of stuff Paul said). In the end I don't really care.

It's an honest mistake; I didn't see your comment when it said there were 2 new posts.

If it makes you feel that uncomfortable, I will offer to delete it.

EditL Now that I think about it, maybe you could delete yours since mine's better :D.

Eh, I'm not uncomfortable, it just made me mentally facepalm. And it's not possible to actually delete a post as far as I know on these forums; the best you could do is leave an ugly empty post.

And whether mine or yours is better is debatable as nobody thinks the same.
