So... you have to babysit them and level up your command points skill in order for them to be useful.

Ehhh, certainly not my cup of tea. But if it works for you, then good on you.

Actually the game is pretty good with this, the design of combat is done the way it is precisely to avoid you having to micromanage our ships and squadrons. When ship captains get in in the update, I think you can tell them to play it defensive and simply harass something without putting itself in danger.

The thing with fighters is that you need them in masses to really kill anything, because unless it has swarmers, it probably won't have enough weapons to be able to shoot all of your fighters down, talons or otherwise. (unless if you're using the single-fighter 'wings' I've seen occasionally, its a waste of FP you could use on a frigate instead) Then they refit at your carrier if you have one.

Once you get into fights where there is about as many opposing ships as you have fighters (or caps are involved), you need to give them more directions to keep them massed and not getting shot to pieces by multiple ships.

Single wings of Talons make decent enough PD escort ships ... effectively acting as 4 mobile vulcans.

It's a bit of a niche at the moment though, the window in the games difficulty progression where that 3FP and 2400 bucks represents a good option to do this. Decent enough in a small fleet for a Gemini, Vigilance (in a fire support role) or something like that, but once you have the money the game is presently set up in such a way that you are probably better off upgrading to something else.

Hopefully the onset of availability-based issues in the future game will help to de-marginalise the talon and all the other cheap craft.

is de-marginalise a real word? I like it anyway ...

Personally I find that a 1:1 ratio of Wasp wings and Gladius/Longsword/Xyphos wings works very well for a fighter mix.

Personally i think fighters/bombers are... kinda useless.

A sungle onslaught with double flaks will turn them into mince meat in an instant (tested in simulation mode against a swarm of all fighter/bomber/gunship wings availble.

The double flak had no problems with 3 pihrana wings droping bombs and the remaining fighters didn't even pierce the armor all the way to the hull and got flakked to death about 30 seconds later.

And that was a lone Onslaught without shields on against 58 FP worth of strike craft.

You're supposed to test them with a carrier. Fighters, alone, with no way to refit will get wrecked eventually. Bombers are useless without refit, they don't have ammo. Your test was more like throwing a bush at the onslaught and see how long it takes to catch fire.

Meanwhile, I made a subset of wasp interceptors that have a longer range weapon and a phase teleporter system. They aren't doing too badly so far, took out a destroyer with some work and refits.

Oh, and I realized that ships with phase shift instead of shields are the new Hound. Fucking annoying, though you can eventually wear their flux up enough that they're forced to vent.

With the current AI it wouldn't really work even with a carrier. If they would go back for a refit at a Condor ot venture they would then attack with one wing at a time since the rest are bottlenecked at the carrier and half of them would immediately run away after taking some damage just to return later and get fragged in a matter of seconds since the Onslaught has only one wing to shoot at now.

Point.

The answer to that is ships with multiple flight decks, but then again, I haven't used the simulator for anything besides testing out weapons. I've just been using Corvus as the simulator, fighting things with varying differences of carriers to attack ship levels after upping the default FP cap so I don't need to dump everything into leadership first, and getting some funds from the console mod to speed things up since besides from trying fleets out this isn't a serious save.

Will the game have a main plot that you can follow, or is it only sandbox?

Really dumb question, but how when buying supplies or personnel do I select how many I want to buy? I certainly don't need 500 personnel, just 1 more for the new member of my fleet.

Had the same problem as you way back when. Shift click. Hold down the shift I think.

Always be shift-clicking things that have a large stock. You can cliky-cliky-cliky-cliky and count up the bits you want individually, or you can get close enough, drop them in your inventory, and then drag back the extra.

Also note that Ctrl-click automatically transfers things from your window to the station and vice-versa.

Though it should be noted that it's usually better to stockpile excess supplies and fuel in the abandoned station; neither sells for much and both are critical for supporting a large fleet in the (current) end-game.
