Well then. Just spend maybe 2.5 hours on my first solid campaign in .54a. I honestly don't see why anyone would complain about "grind"; in that time, I got to mid-range level 22 and put together a neat little fleet. My kitted-out Odyssey, a Medusa and an Enforcer, a pair of Gladius wings, and one Phaeton and Buffalo (destroyer-class fuel and cargo ships respectively), with another 160kish credits and around 50kish credits worth of parts and supplies in my base. All of my crew are veteran at least, and I've got a solid cadre of 80ish elite crew from my time in the Medusa.

Minimal time, minimal effort, and I'm already at the point where I can take down anything but a TTT/Hegemony battlegroup with 3+ capitals and full support. Once I get my fleet points a bit higher I'll buy one of the TTT capital carriers, a few wings of heavy fighters, and start targeting the Hegemony. That'll take maybe another 1-1.5 hours of gameplay, tops.

Incidentally, I'm loving the ship-specific special features. Phase shift makes Hounds far less annoying, but the special for the Odyssey (+50% weapons damage at the expense of not being able to use your shields, functionally infinite duration) is amazing for my playstyle (namely, get in close and open up with a twin plasma cannon broadside); it can take down anything smaller than a cruiser with a single volley through both shields and armor.

Hell, with that boost my burst PD lasers are killing off shielded frigates

I quite enjoy flying around in a plasma-cannon Odyssey as well. Three shots will be enough to take down most opponents, though I have been careless and fragged my own frigates before.

For this version, I've mostly just been seeing how many fighters I can fit into one fleet. Wasps are rather effective at taking out a number of things when supported with an attack frigate with an autopulse laser and me in my multi-hangar slow thing with missiles and flaks.

I learned a long time ago to never put anything stronger than PD on auto-targeting. Losing a destroyer in one go to your own autoed plasma cannons trying to shoot down fighters is beyond frustrating. I also tend to order my fleet to go hold something while I move far away; it splits the enemy and prevents my ships from blocking all of my lines of fire.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

I bought the game a bit over a year ago, when only a few missions were available. I tried a few, failed all of them, uninstalled and decided I would wait until some campaign elements are added with some actual progression.I reinstalled today, tried a new campaign and got blasted, repeatedly... and than some more. I'm just horrible at this, to the point where I'm starting to think I might as well forget about the game completely :-\

I could try some more, but I already reached the point where every new failed attempt only irritates me. I like where this game is going and I want to enjoy this game, but I have been unable to so far. Don't want to get to hate the game because I'm bad horrible at it.

Not quite sure why I'm even posting this, but it's been typed so whatever :P

There is a "Fleet Management" mod that let's you create a base and produce basic things like ore supplies crews of various levels and fuel. You can also buy fleets to fight for you (can't really control them yet) and mine asteroids if you have mining drones in your fleet.

He could also mean the abandoned spacestation tho.

The latter.

There's an option to halve the damage you take somewhere in the settings. Remember to only take on forces that outnumber you very slightly at most, particularly early on. If you're still having trouble... :|

Using default and choosing my fights, but it only makes the agony lasts longer. So :|

It's really just a matter of getting better with the controls and shooting. However dying over and over makes the learning process tedious and hard to enjoy. It would be more enjoyable if there was other option to fighting (and dying). So I'll probably just come back to this in another year or so.

I would recommend immediately selling the starting Hound and buying a Lasher. I'd also avoid Hounds in general at first... against other ships, it's possible to knock out their shields and kill with missiles pretty quickly, but Hounds will just dance around you forever. Once you have more than one ship, this is much less of a problem, but early on just go for other lone Lashers and Buffalos, and save up credits for more frigates or a carrier.

heh, I thought it was just me. I totally suck at this game since forever. I bought it the moment it was available and tried many times to enjoy it, but its just too hard to control for me. When the opther features are in, I hope I can just let the AI do the combat. Yeah and at least a year for that I bet, probably more.

Alternatively, select options that will get you starting ships other than a Hound.

If you want a Lasher, you could just start with one instead, you know.

For me though, I get away from the dueling part of combat as quick as I can and into having AI backup. I've done much better once my aim (or lack of) is not the only thing causing damage.
