You definitely should. It's already very enjoyable.

I started over for this release and I'm already having a blast. It helps that I started with a good ship this time.

Just wanted to drop into the thread to say thank you alexm! Day by day you work to make one of my childhood dreams reality, spinning it into existence using nothing more than your wits, skills and imagination1. It is said that in ancient days there was a prince so filled with love, duty and compassion that his every thought was of his people. You embody this in your chosen field of awesome game development. Whether on your own forums or here (the only reason I haven't joined the fractalsoftworks forum is that I already have all my timesink needs filled with bay12) you are always ready to respond to a question or suggestion and I've yet to see you make a bad move2. Grand Master Dev, I salute you!
*Wayward Device strikes a menacing pose*3

1.'K, I admit there may be computers involved somewhere in this process.

2.And needless to say, I've been watching closely.

3.I'm convinced that in the future, striking a menacing pose will replace all other forms of physical formal respect.

or maybe Valve goes out of business because they invested too heavily in something which then fails - like, say, human civilization.

Do it. It's amazing fun for at least 50 hours or so. At least for me.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

somehow i still have the idea in my head of a X universe inside starfarer... the x ships, the x races, tons of systems, buildable stations...

one idea would be a "ship designer":
-would look a bit like the refit screen
-you could load a image (i.e. enterprise top down view)
-add engine flames onto the design where you want engines to show. and some sliders for size/width/glow/color/etc
-drag/drop/add weapon hardpoints to the design
-a slider to rotate weapon points (one just shoots left side 180° another right side 180°) and a slider for the shooting arc (20° 90° 180° etc)
-then a stats screen where you can +/- the hull/shield/flux/speed and all these stats
-a "compare" button that lets you load another ship so you can compare stats of the new and other ship (might be usefull to get the new ship more easy/balanced to the existing ones)
-buttons to allow the ship to be used "by player"/"buyable"/"faction1"/"faction2"/etc

might be something for "easy" modding in of new ships...
probably would require alot work to get the designer working... like that damage effects are overlayed on the hull image in battle etc...

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

I have not touched this in about a year and the changes are outstanding, I am glad this game got out of the tech demo phase and now has some nifty mechanics.
I am very interested to see how the officer and faction mechanics play out, and I would love to see some nifty mission objectives.

This is starting to have a very nice Mount and Blade in space vibe to it

For the first time ever, I have a fleet....a real fleet.  1 Falcon Cruiser as my flagship with hypervelocity drivers, one of those....round destroyers bristling with point defense, one of those big criusers from that one mission, and about a dozen fighters.

I've already pissed off the neutrals...which is odd, I guess they are all their own faction instead of independent of each other? The empire of Neutral?  {Futruama neutral.jpg} *shrug*

Now I need to be able to leave the sector to weak havoc on the evil pirate fleets elsewhere, (and weak havok on the evil neutral cargo fleet menace).  Anybody know how the development is progressing?

As I understand it, the neutral faction is a collection of guilds and interrelated interests; getting on the bad side of one (merchants, mercenaries, doesn't matter) gets you on the bad side of all of them. In the game, they currently act as a single faction. I'm not sure if that will ever change.

I don't know what the next phase of development will bring us ... so far the focus has been on polishing and finalizing the core gameplay mechanics. Knowing Alex, he'll be wanting to get a bit of depth in the other systems before adding them to the next release. I know I'm personally excited for the RPG stuff and the system travel, but everything on the features list sounds awesome.

Glad everyone's enjoying the new release, I think it's much more fun than before.

Last I heard about this game, it was a series of instance battles.  Does it now have a persistent world and such?  If compared to the X series, how does it fare?

There's going to be a larger galaxy for freeform exploration at some point down the line as well; as I understand it, they're currently concentrating on getting the campaign mechanics in place. But the game as it stands is worth far more than the price.

Think early Mount & Blade. That's where it's at. You can move around, buy and sell stuff (cargo, ships and crew), fight other fleets, board their ships if you win, have a fleet - bigger fleets are slower, etc etc. So yeah, like M&B :)
