It's still in an early stage, but so far the campaign mode is fun. I'm roaming around with a Medusa destroyer that I bought with two Lasher frigates I captured as escort, all of them with the engine augment for max speed. Have the Medusa refitted with 5 LR PD lasers and 2 pulse lasers so far. The Lashers I have loaded down with light dual machine guns. Took on a pirate carrier group and wiped them out using hit and run tactics, took out several and others fled and surrendered. Wound up capturing two destroyers, three frigates, and a couple wings of fighters - with only one of the lashers lost to a really nasty barrage of missiles.

Having fun in the champ, too... but how come I can't capture anymore ships? Have like 100'd marines, 100 spare crew, some elite spare crew and so on, but can never capture even the smallest of pirate ships?

Apparently you only get a chance to capture ships on a chance. If they retreat theres a chance that you'll catch them and they surrender (no marine losses for that), and if you disable them theres a chance the ship will be salvageable. Not sure what the chance is, but doesnt seem all that often. I get more captures from ships retreating than killing them.

You get good money just looting the debris though, so you don't have to capture them unless you want to use them.

Although you tend to get very good money for capturing and repairing them. IIRC, a wing of bombers will bring around 4k credits, fully repaired. And I seem to get captures fairly often, though most of those are from taking on a small fleet, beating the snot out of it, and having most of the ships flee with damage and then surrender.

You want to know what is annoying? Running out of ammunition and missiles, and trying to kill a shielded ship (which can't kill you, and which refuses to retreat) with PD lasers. At least they were EW, or I'd have had to try and ram it into submission.

I am not sure if I am missing something, but this sandbox layer is pretty lacking in anything to do really. Just a station to buy and sell some stuff, and a bunch of random fleets flying around. Also, it tends to be very tough to find a small pirate scout around your same class to be able to kill so getting going can be tough and filled with many many deaths.

I appreciate they are making progress, but its still not much more to play than the previous versions. Or am I missing something?

Here. If you've got the key, you're set.

And duct, you can adjust your ships' configs, capture and loot fleets, buy ships as well as junk, set up your fleet composition, and probably stuff I haven't noticed yet. Other than getting bigger, kitting out your ships, and squishing bigger fleets, though, there's not much going on yet, no.

Hi there! Well, yes and no. The point of this version is to give you a way to check out new ships, play around with fleet compositions, weapon loadouts, etc. The current campaign layer is mainly there to let you pick your fights and acquire stuff - there's not much more to it than that.

But, you *can* get all the way to the very top, in terms of the ships that comprise your fleet. You've got a lot more freedom compared to the static missions, and of course everything's persistent. Then there are some other elements like crew advancement and the effect they have on ships, along with damageable weapons and engines, which make the combat a lot more tactical.

So you're right in that the campaign layer itself doesn't have that much meat to it - but what it does do is offer a persistent framework around the combat.

... in other words, what Frumple said 2 minutes ago. Carry on!

Any advice on  how to get going? The starter ship seems pretty weak and its hard to find find an opponent I can beat. And the starting credits is not enough to buy any fighters, so its all solo until you can kill something.
