Just pulled myself away from getting my arse torn apart to say: THIS ALPHA IS VERY GOOD. Everyone should play it if you like having fun and a enjoy a challenge.

I was surprised by the difficulty. The easy mission shocked me with defeat the first time, then I finished it (like a boss) with a high score. The "medium" difficulty missions are making me feel bad about my fleet command talents. But oh-ho! This is a beautiful game. It does not disappoint in the least.

Going to try modding it a bit tomorrow, but I'll wait until I figure out a way to beat the next few missions.

Quick feedback after playing it for ... er, lost track of time:
  • Sound and graphics are really damn good.
  • Difficulty is no joke.
  • The tutorial works fine for basic commands. Might be easy to miss things if you click through too quickly, but that's the fault of the player being too excited. The tooltips in the War Room were very useful for that part of the game.
  • Getting hit with a few bajillion lasers/missiles/universe-ending-torpedoes at once and suddenly maxing your flux is a death sentence (this is awesome, by the way).
  • Flux in general is a cool wrinkle and an interesting mechanic.
  • Fighters and carriers work exactly like I hoped they would, and they too are awesome.
  • Loving the weapons. You did a great job with the effects and punch of everything.
  • My framerate is steady at 60 fps. I get a slight pause once every long while (15 minutes?), but it isn't frequent enough to bother me.
  • The interface is / looks fantastic. Still getting used to it, kind of hilarious in an "oops" way to blast apart my own poor little frigates with a death ray because I didn't see them as friendly in time. I need to play more to see if I adjust to it.

Wishlist:
Right now, this is a very fun and stable alpha. Only thing I want is a Mount & Blade-esque metagame with territories to fight over and I'll basically never stop playing.

Gotta go to sleep now. Can't wait to play more.

TL;DR: I am not disappointed in the least. I agree with ductape that this could be a new genre altogether.

Edited for clarity and typo.

Is there an escort command? I'd like to be able to order fighters to escort a ship by right clicking the friendly ship.

Is it possible allow the game window to zoom out even more, and are there plans for special orders like having the entire fleet fire all it's LRMs at once :P?

Edit 2:
Is there an escort command? I'd like to be able to order fighters to escort a ship by right clicking the friendly ship.

I notice that fighter craft, when told to repair and refit back at the carriers, tend to follow the carriers around after repairing.

Looks and plays beautifully, I also am getting roundly thrashed on the first medium level. Although I seemed to coast the easy one first time round, probably more luck than judgement.

Tactics on the first medium level are as follows:

Send the main attack frigates to the 'radio buoy' for 30 fleet points, get nearby 10 fleet points (nav buoy) with one frigate, deploy all units.

Then get systematically destroyed.

Anyone got any thoughts about the deployment of ships? Mixture? Frigates first? Ship carriers and fighters first?

I'm doing some experimenting with how the enemy ships react to your ships. As well as getting your ships into as tight a formation as possible before engaging the enemy battleships, I'm planning on sending fighters, corvettes, and everything else that can spin around the enemy ships and put the out of place for the bulk of my ships to devour. While this may sound easy, I've found that in practice that I still don't have enough foresight to get the necessary mass of battle ships and the corvettes right. I'm the one who usually seems to be out of place and it is reflected in the position of my ships as well.

Also, I noticed that Irfanview's screencap capability doesn't work with this game when in full screen. Is this done on purpose to control the media outflow? If it is, I guess I'll just have to take some screen shots later.

Yes, this alpha is amazing...    if anyone is somehow still on the fence, don't be.

I was having a strange problem during the tutorial missions. Everything looks normal when a popup box is on screen or I've pressed Escape, but when I try to proceed into playing the tutorial the visible screen decreases down to about 10x200 pixels with everything else being black. If I hit escape the full screen screen will be printed again as normal. It basically makes the tutorial unplayable, but fortunately none of the missions or loading screens have this problem. I'll have to experiment with screen resolution and drivers and see if I can get a different result.

I have an azerty keyboard and couldn't find a way to remap shortcuts (settings was disabled in the main menu).
I've switched my windows to qwerty to counter this.

Bug? I captured all control points on the map on the second mission but it wouldn't let me reinforce, the tooltip saying that the enemy has control of the map.

Good to see this on a very good track from the look of things in terms of people enjoying themselves---I'm definitely down for a full version purchase at some point!  Blasted lack of funds...

Can this please, please, PLEASE get coverage on major sites like RPS? It is definitely worth it, you have already created a game better than most already. I love this game, and I just cannot wait until you make the meta-game, and have an absolutely awesome game.

To think this is the first alpha says alot for the standards of monsieur mosolov.

If only I could figure out how not to get the living shit blown out of me ...

Yeah, this is a fantastic product for being an unfinished alpha. It doesn't feel unfinished when I play it, which is pretty amazing.

I think Alex can give himself a well-deserved pat on the back at this point. The early word of mouth is very positive, which means he's going to get a lot more sales. Starfarer is on track to be a fantastic indie success story.

Once the strategic portion is added in ... oh man oh man oh man.

Couldn't agree more. This 'unfinished alpha' is already an enjoyable game of its own and could stand up to some retail products.

Oh my god, so many things I want to respond to!

Before I dive in to that, I just want to say again - thank you SO much for your support! Seeing that you guys like the game just makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Detailed replies to follow. Seems like I'll be typing away furiously for a while :)
