Woot!  Can't wait to accidentally flood my flagship with magma! :D

Magma flooding sounds like a good motivator for a slack crew.

I'm afraid we don't have magma, but we do have this:

There's some potential for fun there.  Especially for fighters of all affiliations.

... wait, what am I saying.  We have volcanic planets, and therefore DO indeed have magma.

That ship needs to go deeper.

*retrieves jaw from planetary core*

That ... probably hurt. Might I ask the same question all fighters involved probably asked in that moment: "WHAT IS HAPPENING OH GOD?" Is that a weapon, a massive ship explosion, something else?

Thanks for the update. Great looking effects there. And yes, very motivating for the crews involved I'm sure. Hope they packed some sun tan.  8)

Looks to me like a ship running into a star.

Will alpha testing be available only to preorders?

Yep, it's a star. If you look closely, you can even see sun spots. Stars (and planets) are "below" the playing field - so you can't collide with them - but their gravity still affects you, and in the case of stars, they also burn things. Not a bad place to be if you have good great shields and don't want to be bothered by fighters or missiles, actually.

Yes.

I've decided to preorder. I'm looking forward to the release.

Thank you for your support! Makes my day to see a preorder email in the inbox :)

I went ahead and preordered, it looks good enough that I doubt I'll regret it.

Do stars exert a gravitation effect on weapon arcs too? Like solid mass non-self propelling rounds arcing way more than lasers around heavy bodies?

Oh that's very cool. I expected stars to be sort of abstracted to the background as tiny dots, not relatively close. Awesome. Seconding the "do they exert influence on the battlespace" question.

Glad to see you guys decided to pre-order. That's gotta be great motivation to keep working!

Nope. I did actually try that at one point - it was less cool than expected, and more just weird. I think projectile weapon ranges aren't large enough relative to planet size for this to really "work". Or maybe I just didn't tweak it enough. Either way, never got it to feel right.

Sounds quite awesome. I think I'll buy a copy when the alpha comes, if the response to the game stays positive.

Eagerly looking forward to the alpha release.

Keep up the good work!

And, if it is not to much to ask, could you toss us more screenshots?

The people demand MOAR screenshots!

I was going to do this, got talked into pre-ordering. I'm looking forward to sharing my thoughts, no doubt everyone will do the same (assuming no NDA). I'll be treating the game as real alpha (as opposed to a marketing alpha), so that'll probably keep my expectations lower.

Either way, cannot wait. Portal 2 and Starfarer are really the only new games I'm interested in this year.

Well, if the people demand it... and especially since torches and pitchforks are involved, here's one:

Work-in-progress of the improved warroom UI (working on it now, actually).  Just about wrapped it up except for a few rough edges here and there.

assuming no NDA

Heheh, good one.  NDAs are for guys with the money and inclination to sue people :)

I've been meaning to get some newer screenshots going, actually. I'll see if I can do that this weekend when I'm not so pressed for time and put 'em up on the site.
