Nice, I really like the idea of having a vast arsenal of weapons to choose from. Hope it'll be the same for fighters and other equipment!
And if not, hopefully we can mod some more into it with relative ease.

Looking forward to this. Very tempted to pre-order, might do so when the alpha is out -- oh, and I loved the FAQ, the bit about piracy was great! Seems like it'll be a lot like Mount & Blade (I mean that in a good way) in some general respects. The gameplay videos are sharp.

Why not pre order right now? It's only 10$. It will most definitely give you more then your 10$ worth of entertainment. Besides, the price will only go up if you wait (Not that it's much, but it's worth thinking about).

Thanks! I've spent way more time with M&B than I care to admit, so I couldn't take than in a bad way.

Bloody awesome, I loved the way the text appeared on screen. Reminded me of alien and the way the text came up on the computer screen in it.

Combat looks great and effects were top notch, I can't wait, Keep up the good work Alex!  ;D

Looks pretty great so far. I like the visual effects of ship parts being damaged, and defeated ships being turned into a pile of rapidly cooling molten slag is really neat too. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

I think I will; but I need to wait a bit. My near-future financial outlook is decisively grim. Once the current crisis passes, I'll certainly purchase a copy.

M&B is one of the most replayable games out there for me. This bodes well for Starfarer.

New gameplay video is up! You can check it out here.
Awesome!  :o

Looks amazing. I am wondering if you will consider a way for the player to zoom the camera out while in the battle view, to see all the action.

Thanks guys!

Re: zooming - you already can, though it's capped. There are some problems with zooming out too far - bad for the frame rate, you end up seeing beyond the fog of war, certain graphics don't look very good zoomed out, etc.  You'll still be able to zoom out a decent bit though.

Another thing is that panning with the mouse actually lets you look at whatever you want. Before adding that, I felt like I needed to zoom out all the time, but after that, I rarely do. Pressing 'Z' toggles an extended panning mode which lets you pan around up to 2 screens away.

That might not come across in the video, though - possibly the kind of thing you have to use to see how it feels.

Preordered a copy.  And posting to watch.  This sounds a lot like what Battlecriuser 3000 should have been to me but failed.

P.S. I hear this will be moddible?  Ships and factions are of particular interest to me.

Glad to see some interest in modding! Yeah, it'll be moddable.

Ships are already entirely data-driven, and there's a ship editor that I'd like to release at some point (it's a bit idiosyncratic at the moment, needs some polish). Factions should also be moddable.

Take a look at this, if you haven't already, to get a sense of how it's set up. It's about modding missions (the only thing you can mod in the upcoming alpha), but you'll see the same types of things (JSON, Java, etc) throughout.

I think the video was awesome, definitely the kind of game I'd like to play, so I've pre-ordered it. (also I'm a cheap ass who'd never pay full price for anything ;))

I hope it's as sandboxy as I hope it is. Hopefully.

Even if it isn't, it's still kickass.

@Braindead: WASD to steer, mouse to aim and fire. Holding Shift-A/D activates “strafe mode” where AD strafe instead of turn, and the ships auto-turns towards the mouse. Smaller ships are much better at it, while something like the Onslaught will barely move sideways at all. “Transfer Command” lets you take over another ship, at the cost of a delay. Useful if your flagship is disabled, or if you just want to use a different ship for the latter parts of a battle (faster ships are great early on to capture objectives, for example). (taken from blog comments)
Oh man. Oh man oh man oh man.  :o

I like those controls. Didn't expect a strafe mode (especially one that makes sense). Between the fantastic UI and the sound of this control scheme, I think this game is going to be amazing. Agreeing with Sergius that I hope the sandboxy part of it is great.

Interest level is now at critical!

Arrrrgh ... I shouldn't be buying games right now, but this sounds like it was made for me. PRE-ORDERED! Now I'm really looking forward to the Alpha. Got my receipt from BMT Micro and the product key for the game when it's released, both awaiting the Big Day.

Thanks for popping in and discussing the game with us, alexm. Everything you've said here has really encouraged me to buy. Never would have heard of this game if it wasn't for this thread.
