I think the topic of damageable ship systems has come up here before, so I thought I'd drop in and mention that it's implemented in the dev build :) Blog post here, and direct link to video of it in action here.

I don't really know how I feel about this change, to be honest. I feel the "slippery slope" reasoning is somewhat lacking. One team can lose a ship right off the bat and it it can get them behind and start a chain reaction of failure, but we shouldn't prevent people from losing ships because at some point, someone has to win.

I think a better system could be one where at 25% armor 1% damage starts going to the modules around it. This would let your ships live a little longer (Instead of a hull breach, you lose a laser) and give them the possibility to retreat while still giving yourself the cool factor of "My capital ship made it out with 1 engine and a completely destroyed shield system. I will have to repair that before the next fight."

Hopefully in the meta game your ships will be able to limp back from combat and it will be cheaper to repair a bunch of lasers than train a new crew.

I take this will be tweaked so that it's not possible to take out ships that easily. I do like the idea it self. Of course the slippery slope has been mentioned by Alex himself from the start .

It's an assumption ..but I think he's gonna keep an close eye on how this effects the game. Glad this kind of location and module specific dmg is going to be  implemented though. ;)

Oh, me too. I'm looking forward to this more than any other upcoming game, and there are a LOT of upcoming games that I'd really love to be playing right now.

I'm hoping we can play an early version of the open-galaxy sandbox at the end of this year. Alex said that the first version we're likely to play will involve a single star system, IIRC, which is fine with me. I'm really eager to get into (even super-basic, super-early) sandbox fun. Roaming around the stars and engaging ships/fleets, building up our own fleet, our own crews ... so, so excited.

Yeah, I bought this back in the day, but haven't played much...waiting for the sandbox. :P Hope it comes out soon, I'm sure it will bring another burst in sales for them too.

Yeah, I really love the art direction in this game. Totally digging those new designs.

The thing I'm most excited for is the campaign sandbox + crew and officer system. Oh, and the light RPG stuff (traits and skills) for the player's avatar. We might see an early bare-bones campaign layer sometime in the next few weeks. Hope so, it would add a lot of replay to the alpha. Alex is working to get all the related systems for that functioning (like outfitting your ships).

Still, what we have now is definitely fun. And challenging. And very modable. :D

Yeah same here, has been craving for a game with customization like Aurora (well hard to be at the same depth but even at Sword of the Stars-level is good). Once the sandbox mode is in, I will pre-order this game happily.

I already prebought(?) it, but I'm waiting for the "sandbox" mode. I mean I don't mind an actual sandbox (which means you can do arbitrary stuff), just a working overview map where you can choose who to fight, and persistence after my battles (salvage kept, money, I don't know). The "sandbox" stuff can come later, like buying or building stations.

I'm just not a huge fan of "select your premade mission from this list".

The premade missions have helped to flesh out what was and wasn't working for the developers at least a bit. But yeah, I'm kind of waiting for it a bit myself as well. It feels like that's the missing link that will keep people coming back for more, the missions are fun for a challenge and taste of combat but it's difficult to find a reason to come back to them after a few attempts. Having proper consequences and attachment to your fleet will help motivate that, I think. They're working on a rather hefty update which will give us some meat to chew on for awhile.

Sandbox mode is probably going to be what I'm waiting for.  Combat is interesting, but that alone won't keep me.
Can't remember if I already put money down for this or not actually.
