I can already tell that this is one of those games I will play for a very long time.

I've only played through to the second mission, but so far I must say I'm loving this, too. The gameplay is just fantastic.
The only thing that's bugged me so far is not being able to pan about the battlefield if you haven't deployed your own ship or had your ship blown up and not transferred, yet. It'd be nice to be able to follow your ships about when you're not in the action yourself.

I haven't even been able to beat the 2nd 'medium' mission but I'm loving it. I am getting a bit better.

Have you tried live video feed? That's what I did, god this game is awesome!

I didn't pre-order so I couldn't play the alpha. I still downloaded it though, so I could take a look and drool over the ship graphics. :D
ED: Damn pretty they are, inspired me to get into 3d modeling again, along with the HW2 REARM mod... I wish I had enough money to buy it.

In addition, if you delete one of the default variants from the folder, the game seems to have it's own backup that it will load.

Yep - the stuff in the folders just overrides the default dataset. This is how mods will be handled, too - yet one more folder that overrides stuff that's in it, and falls back to defaults for stuff that's not.

I was surprised by the difficulty. The easy mission shocked me with defeat the first time, then I finished it (like a boss) with a high score. The "medium" difficulty missions are making me feel bad about my fleet command talents. But oh-ho! This is a beautiful game. It does not disappoint in the least.

Going to try modding it a bit tomorrow, but I'll wait until I figure out a way to beat the next few missions.

Yeah, medium is more like "pretty hard". Curious to hear how the modding goes!

Holy cow, that's one huge EULA :o!
Mostly a concatenation of various libraries the game is using disclaiming all responsibility for anything and everything :)

Is there an escort command? I'd like to be able to order fighters to escort a ship by right clicking the friendly ship.

Assigning them to the same battle group does that. They still have freedom of what to engage, but will generally follow the largest/slowest ship in the group. So if say you want to have your flagship be escorted by stuff, make sure it's the largest ship in the group, and they will follow you around.

Also, I noticed that Irfanview's screencap capability doesn't work with this game when in full screen. Is this done on purpose to control the media outflow? If it is, I guess I'll just have to take some screen shots later.

Not intentional at all - I wonder if it just doesn't work with OpenGL? You can take screenshots with the Print Screen key, though, puts them in the screenshots/ folder.

I was having a strange problem during the tutorial missions. Everything looks normal when a popup box is on screen or I've pressed Escape, but when I try to proceed into playing the tutorial the visible screen decreases down to about 10x200 pixels with everything else being black. If I hit escape the full screen screen will be printed again as normal. It basically makes the tutorial unplayable, but fortunately none of the missions or loading screens have this problem. I'll have to experiment with screen resolution and drivers and see if I can get a different result.

Could you possibly take a screenshot, and tell me your system specs? This sounds very odd indeed.

I have an azerty keyboard and couldn't find a way to remap shortcuts (settings was disabled in the main menu).
I've switched my windows to qwerty to counter this.

Bug? I captured all control points on the map on the second mission but it wouldn't let me reinforce, the tooltip saying that the enemy has control of the map.
.

Ahh, yeah, settings will become configurable. At first probably just through a text file.

Yes, bug - and a bad one! - thank you for reporting it. As a workaround, you can still press 'G' to bring up the deployment dialog and deploy normally.

Can this please, please, PLEASE get coverage on major sites like RPS? It is definitely worth it, you have already created a game better than most already. I love this game, and I just cannot wait until you make the meta-game, and have an absolutely awesome game.

It's the kind of thing there might only be one shot at, so I just don't want to send them something that isn't ready. Judging by your guys' response, though, it might be closer than I thought!

To think this is the first alpha says alot for the standards of monsieur mosolov.

Monsieur? I think I like that :)

I decided to play the 2nd mission "Hornets nest" tactically instead of just piloting my ship and getting my ass handed on a platter.  It turned from my crushing defeat into a major victory (73%)  Pausing every 10 seconds to give new orders, intercept fighters with my point defense frigate chasing down bombers with my interceptors and shoving my main forces at their destroyer.

Dodging torpedoes, yelling in rage when I couldn't dodge one and laying down some mirv fire from afar against their heavy ships.  Then hunting down the stragglers, great fun.

I was just doing this very thing (heavy pausing and micromanaging all my ships with the war room) when everything went black. My dog unplugged the computer.

lol that sucks. I've found that if you play this game just charging in, as ANY ship, will get you killed quickly. Bombers destroy anything above a destroyer. Strikecraft and frigates quickly rip apart destroyers. Carriers (except for the Ephestral) are extremely, EXTREMELY vulnerable, but powerful. I feel like this game, even in Alpha, has the makings of awesome.

Mission impossible, seems impossible. But then, I've only been crushingly defeated thrice and havn't tried everything yet.

Also, Chimera mission, epic.  Until the very end, the big ship ran out of missiles and I found out my purple missiles outranged the point defense from behind.   All my other ships were soundly blown up, 2 of the frigates I most effectively drove into rocks.  The Chimera was left under 100 Hull.

Is it possible allow the game window to zoom out even more, and are there plans for special orders like having the entire fleet fire all it's LRMs at once :P?

Just realized I didn't answer that... I think. Have you tried pressing 'Z' to toggle the extended panning mode? You can see a lot farther that way. The reason I ask is I only ever feel the need to zoom out more for dev reasons, not when I'm actually playing...

Zooming out is technically possible (and easy), but the frame rate goes down with more stuff on the screen, and past a certain level, the looks of the sprites start to suffer. I'm not opposed to perhaps adding one more level, though.

Re: special orders - there just might be, need to think that through some. For example, I'd like to have a little more control over ship attitudes (aggressive/cautious/etc) in the warroom, but absolutely have to make sure it's not onerous.

Carriers (except for the Ephestral)

I like how you mixed the ship name ("Ephemeral") and class ("Astral") together :) Sounds like a medication, I think.

Aw, I wish I could do a HIB-style "pay-what-you-want" type thing, but just developing the infrastructure for that would be a ton of work. Well, how knows, maybe it'll end up in the actual HIB some day :)

Thank you, that helps a lot. I think I just might be able to track it down. The extra-odd (though good) part is it's only showing up in the tutorial...

This has exceeded all my expectations.

A really fun game and it looks as good as I hoped it would, the style is really eye pleasing.

I noticed a bug however, on the second to last mission, the medium difficulty one. I encountered a wing of fighters that seemed to have been deployed and were on the map but weren't really there. It was stuck in the top left hand corner of the map and my other ships were firing at one point in space but not hitting anything.
I'm also a bit confused on the strafing mechanic, I'm just used to other games that have a strafing mechanic like in Alien Swarm, W will always go up while A will go left and D will go right no matter the player orientation. Can someone help me with it?

I can see this being really fun down the line when all the extra things you want to add get added such as trading an a vibrant universe. I hope it all pans out for you because this is just great so far, keep up the hard work and thanks!

I ran into this bug on Hornet's Nest, the second mission. Kinda bummed because it was my first real success on any of the tough stuff. Took a few snapshots, not sure if that'll help.

I'm finding it much easier to take an RTS approach to combat, managing everything on a ship is really going to take some getting used to. The only problem is you don't really learn the controls if you don't get hands-on, and it's hard not to get your ass handed to you that way. Key re-mapping could improve the learning curve a good bit, but I won't hold it against you for not adding it to an alpha build. I'll play some more and see what happens, really enjoying it so far though.
