Depends on what tools you have access to, really...

Could probably manage a good bit with advanced optics + one of the 1k range large energy weapons (and if you happen to have a paragon laying around...), ferex. Something to outrange 'em and plink away in peace. Would just need some solid support to keep stuff off you while you burn your way in.

Carriers would definitely give a good showing, though, sure.

Finally managed to down one, marking the game 'complete' for me now. The end solution was indeed to buy a Paragon (found out that the markets only refresh their offerings if you buy what's there. So I bought an Odessey, which made an Astral spawn, bought that and finally got the ship I actually wanted.) and fill up the rest of the CP with carriers. Only the Paragon has the shielding and range needed to get in close enough to pound the station through the gaps in its shields. Once the tips with the MLRS are gone, you end up being able to stay in pounding range longer and longer, leading to being able to burn through its shields and start shorting out weapon systems with the tachyon lances. Once its not spewing bullets like an 80s arcade game, the fighters can start doing their job as well and more parts start falling off.

About 10-12 Alpha cores, 15-20 Beta Cores and 30 Gamma Cores. You might get a few weapons, but the stations aren't armed with anything you can't find elsewhere.

It's sort of an endgame reward, because it's a massive pile of money after you've already needed the massive pile of money to acquire it in the first place.

When I set course for a system I still steer manually, those deep hyperspace lightning clouds can be expensive on the supplies. Even just going around regular clouds saves a bunch of time sometimes.

Going around the clouds will cost you fuel though, as fuel spent is based on distance, not speed. Fuel is the biggest cost from getting to point B. Though if you hit a few lightning clouds that quickly makes it not worth it.

Sustained burn makes it laughably easy to walk through deep hyperspace though. While I think it's super convenient, it needs a nerf. Maybe you can't turn at all with it?

... I could agree with that if, say, max burn and normal burn speed were about doubled or so. Since you'd be stopping and changing direction a faint shitton more. Otherwise I'd rapidly be using whatever mod that popped up to fix the massive quality of life hit, or just writing off the game entirely. Thing's slow enough with sustained burn as is.

Or maybe just removing the stop or somethin', I guess. Double or tripling the added burn, increasing possible max burn. I'd be fine with largely nixing the chase benefits so long as the thing it's primarily used for is improved. Maybe some kind of intermediate step, too... something like sustained burn now (speed for handling), but less burn and with some sort of negative (supply cost, burning extra fuel, in hyperspace or not, something along those lines).

Almost all the evil clouds are really tiny, like a 1 degree course correction can avoid them entirely once you spot them.
I'm only talking about avoiding the cloud altogether if there's an obvious place where it's less cloudy and isn't out of the way. And anyway whenever I reach my destination, fuel is usually the first thing that gets full in my tankers and I have to discard when I'm salvaging, but I'm usually struggling to break even with supplies when fighting.

well, I had bought this game back in 2010, has it really been 7 years?

I went to play it again, surely it would be fun by now? I decided to start a new game using the tutorial mode. This tutorial told me to scavenge a debris field in space, just fly up inside it and activate my SCAVENGE ability. It didnt tell me how to activate it, but what the heck, should be easy right?

I fly up in there, and mash like every key on my keyboard. I jump intot he settings menu to try and learn which keys to press, no luck.

So yeah. Guess I will wait another 7 years?

EDIT: game won't start again after the first time. Silly.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Did you uninstall your old Starsector first? That could possibly cause conflicts?

The first time I played the tutorial, I pressed "W" by reflex at the start.  This had the effect of switching my hotkey bar to the second page, conveniently hiding the scavenging action from view.  I ended up adding the various prompted actions to the hotbar manually as they were unlocked just to continue before I determined what had happened.

You apparently found a bug, then. Or did something rather odd beforehand. It's definitely what's supposed to be there if you're going through the tutorial in the latest version (0.8a).

As someone mentioned above if you hit W it changes to the second bar.  You switch between them with W and Q.

Since I so often hit either accidentally I've set both bars to be the exact same.
