Nice to see someone doin' a Geneforge LP, love those games.
On a side note I don't think the canister madness is included in the first game, the rest of the games have it but not the first.  I may be wrong but the madness only really comes up if you use the geneforge itself.

I do plan to. There is a serious lack of Geneforge LPs, and the only one I could find on youtube was barely much farther than this is right now, and seems stopped. :(

Thanks for the link Naxta, though what I have now is pretty much almost the same (set it up to save to my LP folder without notification as a .png when i hit Printscreen, works fine)

If possible, focus on general creation skills, and lockpicking. Have leadership as a secondary. Lockpicking is ABSOLUTELY the most powerful skill in the game. Living tools are expensive in stores and INCREDIBLY hard to find elsewhere. Any point in which you can save them, you want to.

I already knew that about lockpicking and living tools. But like I said, its early enough to bother restarting.
So, a point in Int, and the rest in shaping/mechanics/leadership?

One thing to keep in mind for Geneforge 1 is that the cost to increase your skills does not increase like it does in the later games.  Don't be afraid to pump up your INT in order to make a small army of powerful creations.  When I play a Shaper in Geneforge 1 I tend to get my leadership and mechanics to at least 10, usually higher for mechanics, and spend most of the other points on INT only spending enough on the shaping skills to make sure I can make all the creations.

Oh yeah, good point there.
Changed to Int 5, leader 3, mech 5 (all the rest unchanged).

Are you going to be doin' a shaper for each game or are you going to use the agent or any of the late series classes?
Not gonna ask about the gaurdian, they suck.

I might do an agent as a alternate part, and I'm pretty sure i remember one of the late series classes being better at the things I like to do.
But yeah, I'm probably going to stick with shaper for most of it.

Edit: oh hey, I found a healing pod I missed the first time. neato. and a extra tunic and thorns. have pre-canister save prepared for later run for perfect ending, and back up to where we left off. Update inbound.

(Note: If anyone wants to be a creation's name, go ahead. these first ones might not last long, though.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
RISE, FYORA! The power of the canisters compels you!

...As I was saying, there was two canisters. I used both, and gain a healing spell and the ability to create a fyora! It would've taken so, so, very loooong before I'd have gotten to do that, whyever did my Master not mention these! Such amazing power! But argh, why do I lack enough essence! I MUST HAVE MORE THAN 1!

Exploring east a bit leads me to a long-dead Shaper. He won't be going anywhere soon, so I might as well take his robe, tunic, dagger, and healing spores. heading back, I see a second path east and follow it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A live rogue fyora?! It must not exist! It should not exist! Fyora, blast it!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ahh. the world is normal agai-*FWOOSH!* Die rogue die!

(Later)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A working thorn baton? Yeeeeeeeesssss! Now I might survive out here! Also found some other stuff, but none of it is as important as this!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Aha, the Quarantine Hall. must be getting close to the ruins of whatever town-like area there was here. Hopefully its not overrun or something, I could use it as a base for figuring out how to get to where I was supposed to go, instead of this Barred place!

Kinda dizzy for some odd reason, but maybe it will go away if I focus on something, like the update.

Edit: Oh hey, all the text is in ~/geneforge/data/scripts .that'll help muchly with the talking parts, I'll be able to c/p instead of pic spam. yay.

(Talky Update. Quotes are the person I'm talking to, single quotes is me)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hello, Servant Mind.
"Welcome, Shaper. I am mind Tavit" it says, reading from an internal script centuries old. "Do you wish to pass through quarantine?"
'Are you all right? You have been here a long time.'
"I am functioning properly. I can still do what I was made to do."
'You really don't mind?'
"I...I...am functioning properly. I can still do what i was made to do. I was not made to have other thoughts."
'Ok, but why was this Island Barred?'
"I am sorry, Shaper. I am limited in the scope of my knowledge. When I was left here, I was given no further information or instructions."
'How long ago were you abandoned?'
"I do not know. I have spent all of that time in hibernation. The decay in my internal organs indicates that the time was well over a century. I am sorry that I cannot be more precise."
Hmm...'How long has it been since someone came through here?'
"You are the first since the abandonment."
'Why was Sucia Island abandoned?'
"I do not know. The island's purpose was Research, but I know no more than that."
Darn. I'd hoped it would know more than that. alas.
'Please let me through quarantine', I say finally. The creature looks at me carefully after i say that, and makes a low, soft humming noise. I don't feel anything, but I suspect some sort of magical augmentation is allowing it to analyze me in minute detail. Eventually, the noise stops, and Tavit says, "I find no reason to impede your progress further. The exit door will open at your approach." I thank it and leave through the door to the northeast, but not before taking what remained in the drawers: boots, another shield, and two more sets of thorns.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As i leave the hall, I see more ornks, but also, to my amazement, a servile! This island must not be nearly as bad as I feared if the serviles are still alive!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After it finishes talking, the servile watches me nervously. He seems happy to be in my presence (even though I am naught but an apprentice, though he doesn't know that), yet he also seems nervous. He must remember how much power his creators have, good. I ask the servile how I would get off this island, for I was stranded here.
He looks worried, and clearly has no idea. "Oh. I... I... I am a humble villager. I do not know how to leave. But in Vakkiri, there are old and wise people. They can help you."

Odd. The servile Timo is referring to his fellow serviles as people. Creations are not people, not even the somewhat intelligent serviles. That is one of the most important things they told me.
'There are no other Shapers here?'
He looks even more nervous now. "I... I do not... No. You are the only one. You are the Shaper. You have returned, and we... we can serve." He seemed reticent about saying that last word, how strange.
I tell Timo that I do not require their total obedience, I only need to leave this island. He looks incredibly relived by this, saying "Of course, we serviles will be glad to help you in any way we can. It is our way. And we thank you, mighty Shaper, for your kindness." All other questions end with him mumbling and telling me to ask the Vakkiri elders, so i dismiss it and decide that I might as well go there. A village of serviles should be an interesting sight...
