Lets Play the Geneforge series!
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:24:59 am »

Hello, Bay12 people! Originally this was going to be in video form, but sound problems made that not happen. So, screenshots, using the free program Gadwin Printscreen 4.5.

Anyway, even though the inventory system in the first two is crap compared to the one in Geneforge 3/4/5, It makes more sense to start at the beginning, and since this is screenshots now, you guys wouldn't having to see me digging through the thing to find stuff.

I will be playing as the summoner/mage-ish class (Shaper), because the other two classes(Guardian and Agent) are kinda boring (though as breadbocks said below, the Agent can be fun if you max leadership and mechanics). Geneforge 4 & 5 have more to choose from, but I'll get to that when I get there.

This first post will have the intro, the gameplay will start in the second post of mine (which will probably be in a few minutes). I'm going to try to do this in RP form to make it more interesting.

Pre-RP, Character Creation screen.

1 point into Int, the rest in Mechanics, and Leadership. Theres probably a better way to start, but I didn't say i was the best at this, did I? I just really like the series.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

(Note: short part because I had a question to ask you guys 2 pics down. most updates will be longer than four pictures unless its mostly talk.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ugh, great. stranded on a Barred island, with nothing to protect myself. Well, at least those idiots who fired on a Shaper's ship are burning and sinking, serves them right.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(These text boxes are what the game uses for most important things, talking to characters, and when you enter a new area. long ones like this I'll usually just screenshot and you can pretend all the You's are I's, or something, unless you people think it would blend better if I copy/pasted the text and altered it some.)
As I walk to the east, what I'd guess is the entrance to the docks storehouse appears to the north, in a tunnel in the nearby hill. Hopefully theres still something left in there that isn't useless.

Well, I doubt it will protect me from why this island was Barred, but a few javelins and a tunic are better than nothing I supp-hold on, whats this strange canister? I've never seen one of these before...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After stumbling a bit after using that canister, I feel a bit woozy. It's not caused by hunger, though, but seemingly by the effects of the strange substance in that canister. The stuff didn't heal or revive me like I expected; It changed something. It's feels like it soaked into my skin and rewrote some of my very being! Was I, an apprentice Shaper, just Shaped by that stuff? Hmm...let me try something. Just need to extend my fingers and focus. Tiny trails of flame come out of them. :o Magic! Specifically, the Firebolt spell. But how? My training would not have reached that point for years!
It is exhilarating and, at the same time, terrifying. This is completely unknown magic, alien. It seems like it was made by my people, but I had no idea that they could do something so wonderful. But why hide it away on a Barred island?

Thats why I saved before doing that. I'll probably show most of the endings, but that brings up one last thing i should ask: should the main go-through be over-canistered, or not?

(RP is below the pics, not above them)
Going out, east, and through a grassy area, I find a door, a room with a lever, a dagger and a shield. The lever is locked for some reason unknown to me, so I go back to the storeroom, and grab the key. I also find a cloak and 12 coins near the box formerly having the key. No idea what I'm supposed to do with money here of all places, but I'll take it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Walking through the gate, I see a deserted barracks. Probably was for some Guardians or Agents. It seems they were in a hurry to get away from here, this place is a mess, and the beds are ruined. A second tunic, a second dagger, 6 more javelins, and a couple thorns (but no thorn baton, strangely) is all thats left.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
On my way along the path, I spot a pot in a small niche-like place. After having found a healing pod inside it, I decide it was worth the very slight detour, and continue forth to a two way crossroads of sorts. I decide on taking the southwest path first.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Such a strange place, this Sucia Island. Most Barred places were home to a small group of experimenters, in crude quarters, far away. Yet this one has a storehouse, a barracks, and an inn. There were many Shapers here once. No idea how many true shapers and how many guardians or agents there were, but there were many. What could have driven them all off so quickly?
...Whatever it was, at least it left some things for unlucky apprentices like me. A robe to replace my cloak with, an belt, and 2 more healing pods. I also found a lever which was not locked, and so pulled it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Passing north through the inn, I find Ornks, of all things! they have tusks, yes, but how have our domesticated creations survived for however long this island has been barred? Tusks do not help such slow, clumsy, heavy animals that much! A gemstone sat in one of the few non-smashed pots left nearby, and a weapons cache (a few icy crystals) was in the hill to the east.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Heading North to the Abandoned Vale, I find an undamaged shaper hall! Amazing! Even the Essence and Healing pools are still alive! Two more canisters sit in the back, though. Hmm...perhaps creations can be made with their power?

I vote we open all the cannisters.

Surely there is no negative to such power?

Do hwat is counter intuitive, and ignore the game's egging on.

So:
No, don't open dem canistahs!

Also, Aklyon, I'm not sure what kinds of builds you have been playing for Agent, but one buffed to crazy insane levels of leadership and lockpicking, favoring the latter can do some BS things early on thanks to the lockpicking. Leadership give useful choices in conversations that can enable you to get access to things which need said lockpicking.

YAY! I know two someone elses that loves these games now! :D

Skills: this set usually has worked pretty reliably, but we're not too far in, so what are you suggesting? (Still staying as shaper, I like having an army of creatures. That Agent build sounds a lot interesting, though.)

I find it interesting that the Shaper cannot even create the very creature he needed to get to the island.

Well, technically we're only a Apprentice.

The Shapers aren't known for being nice or easy to train into. Thats probably what happened in the first place.

So, any stat changes or comments about the text boxes? I really want to keep going.
