Restricted Traffic
« on: January 31, 2011, 11:00:22 pm »

Dwarves have a habit of crashing in my hospital because it is closer than the bedroom, the little buggers. What'll happen is I set the traffic in the room to restricted? Will it screw up my doctor's ability to care for their patients? (I have no less than three medical research squads. Over 200 dwarves, I need to cull their numbers because I 1) hate invasions and 2) can't get burrows to work straight. Everyone can go and hide in the emergency burrow, they just never leave unless I delete the whole burrow.)

The way traffic zones are supposed to work, they only sort of lengthen the distance for path-finding purposes. This should result in your hospital appearing further away for those too lazy to go to their rooms, but I don't think you'll find that out for sure until you test it.

which version are you running?  are you sure your entire hospital and all beds are in the designated "hospital zone"?  'cause my hospital is definitely closer to most of my dwarves than their bedrooms but they never sleep in the hospital beds unless they're hurt... but I remember they used to do that in older versions.

I'm playing 31.18 as well, and I've also seen seemingly uninjured dwarves sleep in the hospital. And yes, everyone of them has a room and all the beds are inside the proper zone. I've also had military dwarves who slept on the barrack floors despite having a bed not only available, but explicitly assigned to them.

Traffic zones don't affect how your dwarves choose where to go - it only affects how they choose to get there.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

While it's no big deal, it's not exactly desirable either. They're provided nice rooms for a reason.

Traffic zones don't affect how your dwarves choose where to go - it only affects how they choose to get there.

The reasoning for using traffic zones here is probably that they'd choose a place to sleep based on distance, right? If you virtually increase the distance between your dwarves and the hospital, they should be more likely to go to their rooms. Or am I missing something here?

All my corrections are done in good humor, as well as for educational purposes. I expect you to do the same for me, as I've said repeatedly.

Bah. There's nothing remotely Nazi-like about caring about grammar, except in the sense that they both draw on flawed theories, Nazi's with the Thule-society inspired bupkis about Aryan bloodlines and purity, and English grammar with the idea that a language that contains both noun cases and null-subject implicit pronouns has a grammar structure that is TOTALLY APPROPRIATE for one that has neither of those things. I will rigidly try and maintain the best grammar I can, because they make our language so much more versatile (try and think of how one would speak in a language that has no distinction between there and their. Go on, try. I want to get all Sapir-Whorf on your ass), but please don't expect me to act as those the rules are based on rationality. Nazis murdered millions. I'm merely a pedant.

Well, I don't take this Nazi comparison too seriously myself, even though the avatar might suggest otherwise. While calling someone uptight about a given subject a Nazi was originally intended as an insult, it can be used in a jocular manner as well.

No, it doesn't work that way.  When dwarves are choosing what to do next, they pick materials and buildings based on straight-line distance, not pathing distance.  A dwarf will decide to sleep in the bed on the other side of a wall even if it means walking halfway across the map and back, because it's the physically closest bed available.  Traffic zone settings only apply after the dwarf has chosen what he's going to do and is deciding how he's going to get there.

So unless I'm missing something here, that means that traffic zones are good for essentially fuck all? I've heard about them being used to up the framerate, but I'll believe that when I see it.

Traffic zones are good for having your dwarves avoiding walking in specific spots when going somewhere.  For example, if there's a particular area that comes within line-of-sight of a forgotten beast in a pit, and you don't want your dwarves seeing it and getting scared, you can set that area as restricted and your dwarves will usually walk around it.  And I have heard that setting main corridors as high-traffic makes pathfinding faster by helping the pathfinding algorithm find a valid path faster, but I haven't done any real testing with that.
