Woaw, that's really lucky for your opponent. Loosing one more carrier would have been a great setback for him.

March 9th

Crap weather. Within all bombers' torpedo range, but they're not launching.

Instead, a US submarine torpedoes a destroyer that chased it in the Makassar Strait.

Well, at least the RAF and USAAF fly massive raids in Burma again, but this time I knew where they would attack, and over 10 P-400s and several Hurricanes and Blenheims were shot for 3 Ki-43s.

Several smaller bases in Indonesia captured by Japanese today, "mopping up" before next phase: Java and Timor. Invasion fleets are ready at Singapore and Takao in 4 days.

2 days to Midway.

I'll add a map or two today, the Andamans situation and general big scale map.

March 10th

Andamans: I think we had our revenge for Nagato today: submarine I-169 I had out there hunting CV Indomitable runs into BB Ramillies. With 4 bomb and 2 torpedo hits already in her, and with no escorts, the brave sub captain closes in, fires 2 torpedoes, both of them hit, causing a massive internal explosion and heavy list. Shes not confirmed sunk but with that much damage, burning and with 2 internal explosions now, she either sunk already or will in the next 24 hours. Scratch one!

Reinforcements to Port Blair are on their way.

China: Kiukian recaptured! Chinese units retreat to a weird direction, effectively cutting out 3 entire Corps behind the Japanese lines.

Burma: 21 P-39Ds, 8 Hurricanes and 15 Blenheims bomb Japanese troops advancing a jungle road. Defending 8 Zeroes and 9 Ki-43s shoot down at least 10 P-39s, a Hurricane and 2 Blenheims. Just one Ki-43 is lost, in a landing accident.

Midway invasion force is now 12 hours from target, and gets attacked by 20 SB2U-2 Vindicators with heavy P-40 escort. They hit 3 cargo ships, and battleships Kongo and Haruna shoot down a couple of them. 6,000 troops will land in the night, supported by Kongo, Haruna and 12 cruisers!

CVE Hosho makes it to Singapore. Repairs are estimated to need 2 weeks.

Kido Butai arrives to the Home Islands early hours tomorrow, CV Junyo Singapore in 2 days.

CPO Saburo Kanda is OK, he shot 2 Albacores as well. The squad only lost 1 pilot, to P-40s, during the whole operation.

American submarine captains were some of the most ridiculously brave fighting men in the whole of the war. You can read every patrol report they made here; USS Barb is a good one to start with.

actually, that was only after the US Navy replaced a large chunk of non aggressive ones with aggressive captains. I was reading about this recently in the war in the pacific forum ^_^ those guys take their history very serious.
------------

Ok so ive played my 3rd game (full historical game) up to about 1 year in. To see whats the best way to handle things.

However, I still do not understand how surface combat and submarine combat works very well with (Reaction 0-6).

How does this work? Should I use this react with all my surface combat fleets and subs? Otherwise how do i make my fleets run into the hex the enemy fleet is going into?

Also how does react really work? if i give something a move order, and something comes near the fleet, does react stop the movement order before all the move points are used and then run towards the enemy with the left over?

So far its been fairly impossible for my to get any surface combat action with the AI fleets, i just use carriers and sink all their ships with airpower since thats a very simple and easy way to do it.

Thanks.

Reaction means the allowed reaction range allowed to a surface fleet/submarine commander. 6 hex for a carrier TF and they might react to kill a fishing boat just to sail in range of 200 land based bombers... But it can be used for mid-ocean intercepts, for example. Its related to the leader aggression rating too, the more aggressive the more likely they are likely to react - even beyond the limits! The same way a bomber squadron leader might decide against flying to a far-away target with just 1 sighting, when an aggressive one might choose to fly whole squadron 1000 nm against a fishing boat or even a sole radio contact. I've had it happen.  :)

EDIT: I use it for submarines that have search planes of their own or operate in an area with search coverage. Almost all the sub kills in the Andamans Sea and Bay of Bengal so far, including Ramillies, were spotted by planes 2-3+ times and sub captains chased them down.

EDIT2: also the cruiser squadrons in reasonably safe waters, plus Tanaka's squad, that madman is best to give all the fights he can take.

Yeah, go Kongo!

EDIT: So, too bad that Cv escaped, what do you expect from the Midway invasion?

Taking next turn now...

This thread seems to have (almost surprisingly!) many viewers/readers. Feel free to comment or ask. As you can see I have given up updating the OP so hunting for stuff takes a while and I'm fully aware of it.

Ok more questions for you then!

For sub ops and surface combat fleets.

1) Does react work with the patrol zones? (i use a triangle shaped patrol zone to intercept enemy shipping coming around the south side of hawaii, does react jump out of this patrol zone?

2) For surface combat, how do i get my fleet to intercept enemy fleets at night? still havent found this option, and i assume its just a early movement phase type thing.

3) Have you found much use for the CS boats, (cruiser seaplane tenders?) I am currently putting them with my surface combat fleets but once again i dont know if its useful.

I think the reason you have so many views is because this is a very complex game with a horrible UI just like dwarf fortress ^_^
