Feb 21st

No mad air battles today, bad weather prevents them. Kido Butai departs from Truk, Z-something place on Mindanao falls to the Japanese. CVE Hosho's B5Ns find and sink a cargo ship in the middle of the Java Sea. Wonder what it was doing there?

Chinese now in full retreat, across the Theater... Interesting?

February 22nd

Air battles over Rangoon begin again, today 5 Hurricanes are shot for 4 Ki-43s. Much better. OTOH the squad assigned to escort bombers doesnt take off: 60 G4Ms raid Moulmein's harbor, sink 3 cargo ship, put torpedoes to 2 more ships, but lose 9 of their number to just 4 Hurricanes. Bah.

Picket ships and submarines in position. No sight of the enemy. SignInt reports heavy voice transmissions in San Francisco - twice!

China: More progress today, the siege of Nanchang is broken by 3 Japanese divisions from the East. Next they'll engage the Chinese to the South and West...

Type 95(Ha-Go) and Type 97(Chi-Ha) mostly, Thai units also have some light British tanks like Vickers E.

Thai units are in my control, but some of them are restricted to Thailand only. They are also pretty poorly trained and equipped.. I'm planning to use them mostly to garrison duties after the initial campaign to Rangoon in Burma.

Yes. He can pay the political points for switching commands/HQs, but there are lots of permanently restricted units and HQs. For example, home defense units on the US West Coast, ground and support units and some air groups.

welp, ive had the most obnoxious carrier battle vs multiple fleets today.

i have 430 planes on my carriers in the fleet,

They begin naval bombing/torpedoing 2 cruisers and 2 light cruisers..... and all my planes found no way to kill them.

The light cruisers are apparently able to out run and out maneuver dive bombers (at 100 ft!!!), and torpedo bombers at 1000 ft!

I even had some zero's at 5000 ft trying to bomb them and out of this entire day of battle...

I used up HALF of my torpedo's on my fleet, and acheived no hits with them. My Dive bombers acheived 2 hits on a cruiser. 2 hits out of so many bombers.

I am so mad right now, since i have to now either raid with bombs on passing fleets or go all the way back home for 12 days and get more supplies :/ rage.

These pilots are some of the best in my empire (80 exp, and lots of dive bomber and naval exp) So im saddened.

Dive bombers dive bomb only when their ingress altitude is set 10,000-15,000. Below or above that and they will "glide bomb". Below 6,000ft they will use the LowN skill, or "skip-bomb", not many pilots have that skill if you dont train them!

Torpedo bombers always bomb at 200ft no matter what ingress altitude - but depending on the altitude they need more time to set up the attack, but high ingress alt might help escorting fighters.

Torpedoes against light cruisers or anything smaller = bad idea! unless you can surprise them. Those ships aren't much slower than the torpedoes and they're maneuverable, you need lots of attacks or lots of luck. Dive bombers work better, good D3A pilots I have have over 50% hit ratio. Once they've hit enough they'll get slowed down and take hits even more, including torpedoes.

edit: the EXP rating is the general experience of the pilot. It is not used in combat! High exp means the pilot is less likely to kaputt/crash/never be heard of again, he is more likely to survive flying a damaged machine home, more likely to find the target(esp in bad weather) etc.

February 23rd

Burma: Massive number of Allied fighters in the air: over 50 Hurricanes and 20-ish Hawks are sighted! They shoot down 7 Ki-43s, but the Japanese confirm 5 kills and another 5 probables.

Sumatra: Bengalis invaded tomorrow, 2 further invasions follow: one to Madang, 3rd to Andaman islands (Port Blair).

Wake: Wake island bombarded by Fuso, Mutsu and Yamashiro tomorrow. Depending on spotted defenses, troops will go in. Kido Butai is in position tomorrow morning!

I just did this, with 5 battleships in feb/42 and they killed 250 infantry, and one took like 30 system dmg in the process :(

I expected more results from a base that has 20,000 troops in it (singapore).

Is there some kind of trick to make it more effective/ less dangerous to do?

How do i know if a base has coastal batteries? and how do i knock those out?

What kind of base? Terrain and forts effect it. Also presence of CD guns, they disrupt the bombarding ships. Set the min bombardment range further(6000ft+) so that they dont A) waste AAA gun ammo B) take considerably less hits, or are out of range, of the CD guns. Open hexes, like China coast etc. are better to bombard than fortifies islands...

You can use bombarding to suppress the CD guns pre-invasion, make them use up their ammunition and mount casualties and disruption/fatigue. Perfect bombardment target is a big airfield with lots of aircraft in an open/countryside base.

Bombarding isnt that effective in actually killing enemy troops, they are usually dug in and spread out, but airfields with the annoying 4-engine bombers otoh...  :P
