Would attacks on th US west coast change the tide in Europe?  Delay D-Day?

I'm afraid no. But West Coast, especially LA and San Diego, are the Allies' greatest supply and shipping hub. Once my offensive finally stalls it'd be tempting to raid it, or Hawaii again at least.

What about B-29s for the USAAF?  Especially the "Silver" variety with their wonderful glowing payload?   ;D

In 3 years!  ;)

Jan 15th.

Kido Butai parks itself off Timor and does what it does the best: kills stuff.

I counted fatal hits & confirmed sunks of 25. 6 of them were BIG tankers, in full oil/fuel load! And more were damaged. Too bad the crap weather prevented further havoc.  :D

The cost to the IJN today is a sole A6M and a B5N, but no pilots are lost. Apparently they didnt have even Buffaloes at Timor?!?

Troops advance in China, Mindanao and Borneo!

And just for the kicks, I order a garrison division, a base force, an engineer regiment and a AAA battalion in MANCHURIA all start planning invasions on Darwin. If his signal intelligence picks that, it will be fun because I'm going nowhere near.  ;)

'The truth must always be attended by a pack of lies.' (Or something like that) -Winston Churchill

Take that, Britain!

So, we have better fighters, but they can build a shitload more? And what about American Mustangs, or something? Do they ever make an appearance?

The Allies, especially Britain, ran a "Europe First" policy. Due to it, most of their resources went to the ETO, apart from (most) Navy stuff. The first Mustangs were actually pretty bad fighters, fairly long ranged but less than impressive performance other than at very low altitudes, and the Merlin-engined P-51B appeared only November 1943. First examples make it to the Pacific Theater only March-May 1944 and the improved P-51D only July-August.

Apart from Zero the Japanese dont really have better fighters. Ki-43 is fairly OK in fighter vs. fighter but it lacks the firepower to be efficient interceptor. Ki-44 later in 42 improves the situation and its a much, much better in air combat as well, but it still lacks cannons.

P-38, P-47 and P-51 are all better than the Zero, but they arrive fairly late and in small numbers(until late in the war) and especially the complex P-38 is difficult to keep flying. Unique complex construction and 2 liquid-cooled V engines are not exactly optimal for primitive field conditions. Early P-38s had some fancy but very lethal(to its pilots) qualities too...

The USN Carrier fighter F6F Hellcat arrives in early 43, probably they have sufficient numbers of it by mid-43. Its better than Zero. But not that much better, pilot skill and tactical situation can give the Zeroes a victory, unless they are hopelessly outnumbered. Zero at least is still longer ranged, and the B5N2's range advantage over SBD Dauntless remains. Bigger problem is the F4U Corsair that arrived July-August 43, it will be the best Allied fighter then, and it can operate from carriers. We will see if the Allies equip their Marine squadrons with them or the carriers. Doubt they will have enough numbers for both until much later.

In theory, Japan's industry can be expanded to counter the US production, but what for? A thousand fighters can be built now and some ships more, but the war doesn't end in 6 months. Each factory expansion and repair costs resources, each aircraft as well, and planes and ships and ammo and equipment and supplies are needed later too. Not much use to have 1000 by then obsolete fighters in 1944, especially if the over-ambitious campaigns in the past have got the best pilots killed, the training was hurried and by then the pilots can barely take off.

Today, Kido Butai tries a different tactic. To my opponent it should seem that it is sailing North West north to Timor island, but instead it will turn south and be south to it at the dawn. No Zeroes will escort the bombers, I'm expecting a counter attack. If it doesnt come, well, since they dont have fighters in the area the bombers should (reasonably) safely sink some more US shipping.

Also the Ternate invasion force will be ready at Tarakan tomorrow. D-day is the 18th, supported by KB, Ryujo and Hosho as a back-up. I'm not expecting resistance other than a possible garrison and the air support base unit.

About 12,000 men in Manchuria planning for Darwin. We'll see if that works.

In 3 days I have units on the Northern coast of Borneo ready for the final planned amphibious invasion of January, Java. Theres 2 armour brigades, 5 artillery, 2 marines and 2 infantry. Add to that, at Sumatra, in 2 days 3 battalions of artillery and 2 of Marines have secured Oosthaven. They will be shipped over the strait(to Java) while the main force lands the North coast East to Batavia, hoping to trap the obvious defensive positions and prevent evacuation. I dont think the Allies expect me to move forward this fast.

Ki-21s struck Batavia yesterday again, no ships in the harbour, but lots of planes on the field. Ki-43s will try to reduce their numbers some...

Invasion plan screenshots, for Java, south Borneo and Celebes, later today.

Jan 16th

Kido Butai's B5N2s strike Darwin, sinking 4 cargo ships and a mine layer. One B5N2 is lost to AAA fire. Heh. Surigao in Philippines and Hwaiyin in the New Caledonia fall to the Japanese. Looks like the Chinese opened a southern front too: 8 Corps, 24,000 men, attack Japanese lines but lose over 2,000 men to less than 200 of the 10,000 defenders... Defenses are well prepared!

In Rabaul, the G4Ms are ordered to stand down. Port Moresby's activity has risen, and aerial reconnaissance reports the enemy to have flown its B-17s out and over 50 fighters in. Bedeloab's 45 Zeroes will move there tomorrow, G4Ms flying out, back to Truk.

Are you planning to take out those Dutchmen on the southern coast of Borneo?
