Stealth?
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:05:49 am »

So. Since the new version came out, I've been playing around, however, my favorite build option is gone it seems.

I can't seem to raise up my stealth much at all, so, uh, I was wondering, how exactly do you guys do it? The bouncer no longer raises stealth it seems, so what exactly raises stealth anymore? Also, I've not yet found black turtlenecks or ninja costumes.

I suspect you've never tried doing many illegal things yet in your game. The second the CCS knows you're "active", they'll come down on you like the hammer of God.

You might need those outfits. Just do stuff that should rise conservative suspicion, then find some conservatives and just keep walking by; you should get a light blue text something in line: "X blends in to the shadows" or whatever.

You *need* a black or ninja outfit, and you might need to make one. Once you do that you can pretty much raise it up to 10 without much difficulty (make sure not to hide in one place for too long; rolls get harder the longer you wait). You can potentially get it up to 11 by stealthing near guard dogs.

Use the activation screen option to make clothing. You only need one point in tailoring skill to make black turtlenecks, and it trains quickly by just making a few level 0 togas.

You could also buy a black robe from the Oubliette, or a black suit from the department store. Oh, and picking the professional thief option to the last character generation question starts you with a turtleneck. I think the ninja costume and the catsuit give you hefty bonuses to your stealth rolls, though, so getting some tailor-made sneaking clothes made will probably be worth it.

It seems that my Stealth-4 guy in a Ninja Outfit kinda immortal. Well, i improved his skill till 12 and he was never ever spotted at all, although he robbed all the factories and workshops at I-Disctrict and University District. Not to mention the huge profit from thieving...  I think stealth is overpowered somewhat  ::)

Guard Dogs will almost always spot you.  Also, once you get spotted, you're often dead.

But yeah, I agree that somebody should probably check that it isn't strong to the point of unbeatable.

I think Stealth requires tweaking to reduce its current effectiveness. Very careful tweaking, however, given it might easily go from overpowered to useless if detection occurs often enough it becomes nigh-impossible to keep training the skill without fatal consequences.

Hm, perhaps one solution would be to assign guard dogs to alarmed locations, to detect the liberal vermin.

Do I sense a Conservative Sleeper Agent in our midst?

I think the thing with stealth is that it gets a lot less useful when you have more people in the squad. A lone liberal ninja can sneak anywhere, but if you want to have a full squad, stealth is worthless. It's a choice between stealth and firepower.

Not that I'm saying that stealth doesn't need further balancing. Just that it's okay for it to be way more powerful than disguise. It makes solo games easier, but I think that's just great. Fighting the Conservative Machine alone is pretty cool.

Darn, I failed my Stealth Check!   :P

The cool thing about the current stealth system is that it means the ultimate number for apartment thefts is...one.

So, you can have one liberal steal for funds, another write for the liberal guardian, and train a third at the university in Dodge, First Aid, and Driving to become the ultimate Liberal War Machine!

And that still leaves your founder and three other recruits.

Maybe it's the alarm system that must be fixed, not the skill by itself. This just looks silly when i can destroy ALL the equipment and steal ALL the chemicals in a low-level Chemical plant just with a single yoga instructor which was just recruited. This job must be good for stealing the important papers or destroying some equipment, for example, but not for stealing all the laptops in the research facility. Really, i cannot help imagining a sneaking ninja bearing a giant sack of laptops.

I can one-up the sack of laptops.  I once stole all the guns and armor from the army base with a stealth-20 individual in a ninja outfit.  All of them.  Including the entire contents of the base's armory.

Well, doing it at 20 stealth skill is fine, because getting any skill to 20 makes you a liberal demigod. :P
