It's a huge problem when dwarfs start using barrels that you need to brew.  Getting that delicate balence right and managing stockpiles is difficult.  Other then that I don't know, expanding into the cloth industry seems like the thing to do.  Although why we'd more wealth then a non-cloth fortress makes routinely is beyond me.  Then again its better then cooking meals to sell which strikes me as possibly the undwarfyest thing in the world to do.

Er, masterwork dye is worth 240 (unless it's redroot) - remember, masterwork value is base value times 12, not 6.
Oh yeah, my bad, I've always had a blind spot for basic maths. Trigonometry? Can do. Four times two? That is totally six.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Honestly, I'm not sure why I'm complaining in the first place. I've got a near perfect embark. I've got trees, soil layers, a river, Unicorns, Tigermen, the perfect balance between field and cliff face, and I'm not actually dead yet. I also invested in some sun berries, so my booze industry will be working out very well, too.

Actually, it's booze I have most trouble with. Unless I get lucky and have a reasonably skilled farmer in the first migrant wave it's unlikely I'll get anything planted before the third year, by which time I can seldom spare the crops for making thread.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Now, quick question: Is it possible to get a unicorn on a chain, or will it just keep trying to kebab the poor dwarf who decided to open the cage?

If the cage is right next to the chain, sometime it works. Have some cage traps ready if it doesn't, and make sure the dwarf you send in to do the chaining is well-armoured.

My first fort's economy was based upon clothing and food, but mostly clothing, since I could tie up more dwarves doing that than I could with food.  (I was going for full employment in a 200 dwarf fort as a goal with my first fort.)

I set up too large a farm, and wound up trying to think of ways to use it all up, and created a huge output of clothing, with four legendary clothiers, dyers, and weavers.  The clothes were worth quite a bit, and I could buy caravans with a bin or two, but often just offloaded as many as I could ship to the trade depot, just to clear up some warehouse space since my fort produced more goods than I could actually find places to store, and I was running out of soil layer to make into warehouses without crippling my wood industry.

(Incidentally, my nobles and children were all legendary farmers, thanks to letting them do the harvesting of about 400 tiles of farm, since they were the only ones with no other labors enabled.  There were no parties in my forts, and very few friends, since everyone was always working all the time, even though I had meeting places and the like.)

'Nother question. Now that I can make rabid Unicorn gate watchers, is there a way for me to sell unicorns?

"Ma ... why is the animal trainer wearing full plate over chain over leather armor?"
"Well, that white beasty there wants to poke large holes in him, and is just waiting for someone to open the door of his cage so he can have his chance at it."

Funny, clothing is always the sustenance of my fort, and some people have been talking like that's unusual. I don't bother dying it, too much effort IMO, especially since I buy colored cloth off the elves and humans anyway to augment my homegrown output.

However I did just figure out last night how much frigging serrated discs are worth. Hellooooo.
