You have to alter more than just ethics. The [CAN_SPEAK] tag seems to be the cause of the problem. DF dwarves are from Narnia I guess. :)

For edible castes you need to remove the [INTELLIGENT] tag from the creature entry and put it in with the castes you want to be intelligent. The butcherable castes can be left without tags entirely, it seems, but you can add [PET], [TRAINABLE], [CAN_LEARN], and [COMMON_DOMESTIC] without problems. There are probably others, but those are the ones I've been fooling around with. Making them domestic animals allows them to be bought from the embark screen, but they don't get names. I don't know if they get personalities and material preferences, but the starting seven do (they vanish from the description screen upon embark, but they're still active. DF has the personality traits, and making a note of the material preferences before embark allows for direct testing).

I don't know how butcherable castes handle food and drink, since I turned off all those needs trying to work this stuff out. If the worst comes to the worst they can be given the no eat or drink tags. Off the top of my head, tigermen can be taken care of by providing meat and a well with water directly below the well tile.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Actually no, you don't need to mod the creatures at all.  Simply changing [EAT_SAPIENT:ACCEPTABLE] will suffice to make anything edible, and similar with MAKE_TROPHY_SAPIENT.  The whole point, is that a sapient creature is one that is intelligent.  Thus, if you make it permissible to butcher intelligent beings, the tags can remain and you can still butcher them.  I have proven this, as I butcher goblins who are still vanilla-style gobbos.

You do need to re-gen to change ethics, but I think you don't need to regen to alter creature tags.  At least, I modded monkeys and wolves to be trainable without having to regen, so as a stand-in fix you could make goblins unintelligent and thus butcherable.  I wouldn't advise this.

You can't butcher creatures of the same race you're playing as.

Dammit, but I love you people. Many groups have succeeded into making psycopathy an art, but only Dwarf Fortress has made it a virtue.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I think it might be a difference between the meanings of "slaughter" and "butcher" and the use of the latter to mean the former.

But I don't know.

See a couple of posts above. Moving the [INTELLIGENT] tag out of the general creature definition and into specific castes leaves the castes without the tag in a sort of limbo state. Just doing this means the untagged caste can't learn or be butchered from the Animals screen (since they lack the pet tag), but you can insert the tags manually. Stay away from [CAN_SPEAK], it restores the labour menu and takes them off the Animals screen. Maybe you could butcher dead dwarves because of ethics, but I haven't tried that yet. Note that making them butcherable does not make them edible. I forget which combination of tags caused this, but if dwarves don't move the butchery items to the meat pile you need to fool around with the raws some more.

I remember that when I attempted this in 40d with a race of domesticated creatures who could speak, my dwarves buried them upon their deaths, and even buried roasts made from their meat in the coffins. Behavior similar to this but caused by different tags might also interfere with the consumption of dwarf meat; however, I don't know if the behavior was changed for the current version, however.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make the walls of your above ground fortress entirely out of soap made from the fat of migrants. Only the original seven will be exempt.

I call it the Cathedral Of Flesh.

I remember that when I attempted this in 40d with a race of domesticated creatures who could speak, my dwarves buried them upon their deaths, and even buried roasts made from their meat in the coffins.
These aren't separate creatures, these are a caste of dwarves (if the order matters at all, it's the male caste that are butcherable. It's not necessary at the moment since there are no kids around, but there are problems reported with unintelligent creatures and intelligent offspring), so yeah, it's new for .31. Being dwarves, they will also rise from the dead if you don't put down a slab for them. Not sure if they'd get their remains or roasts put in a coffin, but they're supposed to be eaten, not buried, so no coffins for them.

Soap is a pretty good way to use dwarves. I set all physical attributes to 1000 or 100 for other testing reasons, and dwarves are quite fatty for being so small.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that ethics tags don't affect gameplay, I thought that ethics tags only affected worldgen.
