Essentially just factions that sprung up after landfall, that weren't on the ship.

I'd've liked to have a 14-player map, but afaik its hard coded for 7 max :<

According to the leader profiles, only Cha Dawn was actually born after planetfall. Despite being splinter factions, the other four human leaders were all part of the Unity and have earth origins:

Aki Zeta-5 Luttinen was born in Norway (which is misleading, since she has a finnish surname), and was a "Subroutine Specialist" under the Unity Science Officer (Zakharov).
Svensgaard served as the Unity Astrogator*, he himself hailing from Alaska or somewhere in the vincinity (if I recall correctly).
Domai served as a nameless assistant, a "Jobtech 3rd class".
Roze, a notorious former hacker, was employed as "MorganNet QA Manager" and later worked under Unity Information Helpdesk Services.

*I keep reading this word, and instead of thinking "Space equavilent of navigator", I think of space alligators. Something is clearly wrong with me.

Also, "Aki" is a boy's name. Apparently, the SMAC GURPS sourcebook gives her name as "Annikki Luttinen", but offers no explanation as to why she had a Finnish name in Norway.

Maybe she had Finnish parents? Maybe in the future Scandinavia gets lax on immigration so people from Finland can move to Norway.

It isn't all that weird when you come to think about it, Scandinavia is already lax on immigration and the two countries are practically neighbours. Hell, about half a century ago there was a mass immigration of workers from Finland to Sweden (and presumably Norway as well). I myself have a finnish surname and heritage, despite being swedish to the core and not speaking a word of finnish, so it isn't all that surprising, just a tad misleading.

Can you even buy it anywhere? I heard of it on TvTropes but as far as I can tell it's discontinued or w/e.

That's quite interesting, actually, since the story is that the humans had been on Planet for quite a few years before the splinters arose and the aliens arrived. I wouldn't think that Domai for one would have had access to the longevity treatments to stay alive that long. Of course, every game still starts with you crashing down from the Unity, so maybe it was never meant to make much sense in the first place.

Good Old Games sells it, expansion included.
Thank you.
Hey, when did it have the expansion? When I bought it, it didn't come with it, although it looks like I could re-download it to get it(but I don't really want to right now).

A truly terrifying vision of the future. :P Yeah, being called "Annikki Luttinen" In Norway isn't impossible, just statistically unlikely. A girl being called "Aki" is pretty weird, but also not impossible, especially a few decades to the future. Naming conventions change, sometimes quite rapidly. I still like "Annikki" better, though.

It had the expansion when I bought it a couple months ago. You should probably get it. The expansions adds not only new factions and facilities, but also bugfixes.

The splinters themselves did arise after planetfall, but their leaders did not. It's not too far-fetched to imagine the leaders having lived a small while working for their origin factions before becoming disgruntled enough to break apart, in fact, it's implied this has already happened when the progenitors arrive, which happens only a few years after planetfall. That's perfectly survivable by a human being, assuming you're bright enough to avoid the whole "psionic worms that want to make babies inside your skull cavity" problem.

Given that the Cybernetic Consciousness are mind/machine humans, you could stretch that there's a some cross-gender or gender-neutralizing going on in that faction. A genetically female person taking on a male name after being uploaded doesn't seem far fetched.

That said, this theory is pure fanwank and may not be supported by the game's documentation.

None of the expansion factions are supported by the games backstory or documentation. Or the game's mechanics, really, for that matter. There is a reason many people dislike them. ;)

Some of them are neat in their own ways though.

If I was to rewrite the expansion's canon I would have just made the other faction leaders part of a "what if" scenario on a different timeline. What if the original leaders died in the crash and these chumps inherited Planet instead. I would also remove the alien nonsense as well, Planet is meant to be alien enough.
Cha Dawn would likely have to be scrapped or completely reworked but I doubt many people would miss her.

EDIT: One too many "n"s in canon.
