Wow... I think SMAC is still good looking, even for today. Is there something wrong with me?

The ONLY annoyance I have with SMAC graphics is that they run in 256 color mode, and alttabbing doesn't set it back to normal, so windows then appears in 256 color mode. You don't realize how MANY colors are on the screen until its set to 256, I'll tell you what.

I discovered this game about a year ago and was quite impressed. I've never won the game, Im just too bad at these games. Same thing as with Civ2, so much playing, so much losing.

Same. Going heavy research mode with Morganites and their massive energy supplies.

You can't edit the unit graphics and models. Firaxis at the time used a proprietary format which shrunk the filesize like crazy small and kept quality high but the license was too expensive for modders to consider working it. best we can do is edit the terrain a bit to look a bit less grainy but thats much it.

I could have sworn that I did some graphic editing on this ages ago. Through PSP7 (or 9) or maybe Irfanview converting. Maybe there was a converter out all those years ago or I did a raw byte-rip run?

I could be thinking of civ 2 though (which wasn't priority at all).

I've definitively seen at least one mod that has a lot of new graphics and models, and I'm sure that more exist.

FAKEDIT: A search for Alpha Centauri Game Mod turned up a couple. Way less than, say, the number of Civilization mods, but they do exist.

Then you are talking about the custom faction graphics then, we cant the current ones.

Can't you just create 7 new factions, comment out the originals, and copy over the stats, while assigning the graphics to the new ones? Same factions, updated graphics.

Either way its alot of effort and you might as well be better off playing Planetfall on CiV4 then.

"Give me a tech or I'll crush you like a bug"
Me (looking at the overwhelming force on my border): "OK"
"Give me *another* tech or I'll crush you like a bug"
Me: "Oh ****! OK"
"Sucker! I'll crush you anyway!"

The first time Miriam did this to me I was actually impressed. Annoyed, but impressed.

The expansion was fun, but I get the impression it was not as well thought out. Wasn't there a bug where the spy specialist faction could get their spying so high that it hit an overflow bug and caused every mission to auto-fail?

I couldn't remember. I was the workers republic and killed all spies onsite.

The Xpac factions were either exagerated versions of old factions
Drones - Yang
Prophet - Elves
Cyborgs - University

Old factions with some twist

Pirates - Spartans

Mary sues.

Aliens

Or a actually original faction for a change.
