Yes, those Ogre units are SMAX only as far as i remember.
And they're a reason why the 2 aliens factions can be that dangerous, as they spawn with one (though the game try to balance this by having their arrival delayed on Planet, unlike the other factions that start on day 1).

As far as I can say, ogres don't heal (if you're human?). Yes, it does get lucky sometimes :D.

SID MEIER'S ALPHA CENTAURI
README.TXT 1.0I
1/4/98

thats what i got installing right now, and im using win7 home premium x64.

edit: tHE GAME WORKS!!!!
Then you have a cd with the 32 bit installer. That, or my computer was acting odd. Still, the 10th anniversary edition is out there if you have trouble installing it. It also helps that it's one of the few SMAX re-releases, just in case you wanted to check that out. And yeah, I prefer SMAX, minus the new factions and the aliens, since I can turn off Direct Draw and play it at native resolution. Kinda wish I can get it into a window though.

No error, the setup runs according to the task manager, but nothing happens.

..... if its in the Task manager then its compatible, windows wouldn't even acknowledged 16bit installer marking the file unknown.

Weird. Whatever, I got a working version. I can kill down native life and send it to bore skulls in my enemies, then use those skulls to drink water out off since they're more eco-friendly than making plastic.

Run it windowed - that should make it a lot easier to find a cam program. These old 2d graphics games and things like Fraps do not mix at all.

One way is by using the method mentioned in the link (couple of replies down, look for a attachment of the result)

Aside from that - I'd google that. :)

You can change the game ini to run the game at whatever resolution you have full screen - doesn't seem like Windowed (aside from my previous link) is possible.

As for recording you could try asking Grimith on Youtube for how he managed to record his "Lets Play" video series. He might be able to get you on the right track faster than trial and error on your own side.

I wish Sid would make another Alpha Centauri game.    I spent so many hours playing buggy multiplayer with my brother as a kid.  :)

Considering how they remade Colonization, I wouldn't dismiss the thought of going back to Alpha Centauri at some point - either as a Civ5 engine remake or maybe even as a Civ5 mod from the fans. :o
