Obsidian short swords are wooden clubs with obsidian edges. They even use a log to make them in addition to the obsidian.

Maybe they should be called "Obsidian-edged wooden swords?"  This confusion just keeps coming up...

It's not easy to form glass into a blade (yes, obsidian is a type of glass. look it up). Obsidian "short swords" are based on aztec weapons, and are essentially clubs with thin sharp bits of obsidian hammered through them.

Items need to be defined in a way that allows defining the type (matgloss, whatever) of materials that Must, or Can be used in their construction. As such, a shortsword would be defined as always made of metal, a wooden sword (bo?) would be made of wood, and a macuha.. macuiha...  damn...  macahuitl! - would be always made of wood, and any material with the [SHARP] tag.
