Open/ajar doors do nothing to pathfinding.  They are treated exactly like open tiles, so there's no reason to worry about that.

I use the vertical cloverleaf mostly for workshops, stacking them directly above and below their stockpiles for pathing efficiency.  It's a very easy modular design that has served me well, but I get a little bored with having everything fit in neat squares after a while, and consider it only for the "function over form" parts of my fortress.

I've always liked the 6 room cluster since using it in my first fort, but have wanted to move onto making a 3D fractal design for something that might make for a really impressive, if almost impossible to view outside of Stonesense, means of designing a fortress layout.

For noble rooms, I tend to just build up along the side of a mountain, letting the natural slope of the terrain guide the shape of my rooms.  They tend to wind up with horseshoe-shaped suites because of it, and I like the organic design, even if it isn't as impressive as the massive repeating fractal.

Grids, grids are easy, and look nice and organized. Especially for bedrooms.

Bah. I go for simple layouts so I caan get to mass producing steel armour sooner. Then onto mega-projects.

Those aren't exactly megaprojects, but they certainly do nothing to lessen the impact of the fortress as a whole.

Honestly, I kind of prefer to think of the entire fortress as a megaproject in and of itself. 

My goal for my next "serious" fortress is to have the entire layout planned out from the very moment of unpausing immediately after embark to create a massive, dizzingly complex pattern. 

Stuff like building the entire fortress as a giant double helix with little walkway rods between the two spiral corridors, or designing the whole fortress as a nautilus shell that gradually works its way outward as I expand the fortress, although I'm trying to come up with a more complex pattern to try next.

Do you use Quickfort or just free hand it? I personally like it because I have an out of game blueprint of my fort, but I notice most players just don't use it.

Free hand.

I don't really like reusing the same stamps over and over again, so I tend to just go with macros if I'm going to do something on repeat.

I find it easier to plan on the game map, anyway, and I don't mind if it takes a long time to punch in, since I enjoy the design portion most of all, anyway.

Ah, there's the difference. I guess I'm not using Quickfort in the expected manner. I usually do a blueprint for each z-level, and I will base each level from the original for hallway alignment since I use stairs as hallways for easy vertical movement. I guess I just like using spreadsheets more than the in game designation tool. This also gives me an easy way to do traffic designations and furniture placement via find and replace or copy and paste. It does lend to more uniform designs though.

I use Modified Windmill Villa a lot, which is a great design for shoving in towers or placing just about anywhere. Minimal steps to a bed is always useful.
