I cannot start in windowed mode, f11 into windowed mode, or tab out of the game without a crash:

I am running Vista 64, athlon 6400, 4 gigs RAM, 2 ati 3850's in Xfire.

while this is not gamebreaking, it is a bit of an annoyance, as i am a big multitasker, any help would be appreciated.

btw Fullscreen mode works fine.

Any changes to your init file?
Tried running a fresh copy of DF to see if it persists?

has always done it from first install on 2 different installs in different folders, downloaded from different hosts

Just a bit of an update, i'm able to tab out of the game by hitting alt tab,(brings me to a black screen) and then ctrl alt del to get to the task manager to get past the black screen, at which point i'm able to do other things, DF will crash if i attempt to tab back into it.

I've got current drivers, i'm wondering if this has to do with running on vista, a 64bit os, or having a Xfire setup. if there is any digagnostics i can do, or if anyone has run a similar setup without the problems i have please let me know.

i get the general idea of what they're saying, but i wouldn't know where to start fixing it on my end.

i'm looking now at using virtual pc to run windows xp within vista, since i can't find an xp emulator, or trying my hand at a dual boot

I guess this would be a workaround, but you'll need a beefy computer to do it:

to
[WINDOWED:PROMPT]
or
[WINDOWED:YES]

In your /data/init/init.txt file.

Unless I'm missing something really obvious, that should fix it.

yeah, its not an issue of not being able to get to windowed mode, i currently have it set as prompt, and have tried various other installs with different settings, its that it will crash immediately if i attempt to use windowed mode.

It would appear something about windowed mode is offending Vista, so it doesn't allow the program to do something, which leads to a module not being found.

From what I understand the stackhash error seems to be a way of categorizing missing modules, when it doesn't know what the missing module should be named.

Alright I finally figured out the problem.  It seems that Gamer OSD, an asus gaming utility was interfering with DF, I have uninstalled it and am now able to run DF in windowed mode.
