My argument is that we should not forget the minority in our usual rhetoric, not that the majority of the population is asexual.
It's called nitpicking.

Perhaps.  I'm not sure how to stop stereotyping without nitpicking.  If anyone has any better ideas, I'm all for them.

... I am not, in fact, a troll, but I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings.  Again, I thought the qualities I mentioned were inherent to all scientists--i.e., part of the definition, much like every hydrogen atom must, by definition, have exactly one proton.

There's a difference between "being a part of a definition, and therefore logically assumed to be shared by every concept to which the definition applies" and "being common to a group, and therefore illogically assumed or stated to apply to each member of that group."

I say "illogically" not to attack your rhetoric, but to provide contrast between the two modes of reasoning.

A tiny thing , though, a non alcohol even isn't the same as a no binge drinking event. Which one are we speaking about here?

Alcoholic drinks are usually the best one : as much as I like orange juice, it doesn't beat a Leffe, a good Bordeau, or a carfully distilled rakia. Only coffee and tea are somewhat serious competitors. So in that respect, a non alcoholic even have serious drawbacks to me.

I'll be honest: I frankly just don't like alcohol--nothing I've tried, anyway, and I've had sips of a number of things.  As such, I'm one of the folks who sees alcohol at a party as a major drawback, mostly because I really don't enjoy being around drunk or tipsy people.  A little social drinking is one thing, but talking about one's "buzz" is another--and at my age, having just turned 21, it seems that most of my age group is more fascinated by alcohol than I am.

Quasi-clarification: I have never even been to one of these parties, so I am not going to pretend that I'm a big authority on the subject, or even that I wouldn't enjoy myself.  My father gets weird when he's been drinking, and I have a friend whose passion for alcohol and inebriation has kind of scared me away from that social scene.  Anyway, there's my prejudice.

To each their own, but I figured I'd hand out the other perspective.

The rules seems to be: "If beer then go; if not no."

...

What the hell? I'm not getting this. Has our society devolved into a beer or no beer social scene? Worse, is everyone cool with this?

Have you tried looking into the more intellectual and/or stereotypically "geeky" clubs and organizations on campus or whatever? Off tthe top of my head that would seem the logical place to start looking for non-alcohol-dependant social functions...

I dunno, it seems people would rather spend their lives in front of the TV. Then everyone bitches that there's nothing on TV and how it's all stupid....
But... you... watch... it.... Why?

The whole point people seem to miss, is that whatever stupid event it is, is just an excuse to hang out with people.

Try incorporating watching TV into the events in question. The university that I went to for undergraduate studies, for example, had an Anime And Gaming club that would screen japanese tv shows every thursday evening...

Most geeks I know have very unhealthy drinking habits. So that's not a given.
I even used to play AD&D, drunk. Not that that went anywhere but it was fun once a week.

Yes, I realise I really sound like an alcoholic. I drink 5 beers a month right now. So I'm just frustrated I guess :P

lol, what.

Someone disagreeing with you = troll?

Anyway,
I'm in college,
I don't drink but I attend social events that involve alcohol
I'm heterosexual but I feel no imperative need to get laid.

I'd rather just make friends and keep things casual.

I'm not a special snowflake, as I have friends that are the same way.
I take just a little bit of offense when people claim that everyone is obsessed with sex. I like to think that my life isn't controlled by reptilian urges.

To OP:
Try inviting different kinds of people; clearly the ones you are inviting now simply aren't interested, and if they only come when bribed with booze, clearly the prime motive is to -get drunk- rather than -come to your event thing-

Yep, Chutney's falling back on that age old fallacy. Nobody agrees with you and in this situation maybe you should act like a grownup instead of accusing your opponent of intentionally trying to piss you off to try and save face. In fact, considering you're the one being the most hostile and the most annoying, you're living in a very glass house. Toughen up, bro, and act your age. If you're a scientist, you can't be much fun to work with.

Personally, I find most drunk people to be unbearably awkward to be around, and often, just plain weird. They often act strangely, inappropriately, or are unreasonably angry or giddy. I have trouble looking at it as anything but a temporary handicap, something to be avoided and pitied.

That said, I do like the taste of pretty much any alcohol that's not wine or beer (the former tastes like rotted fruit and makes me gag, the latter tastes like stagnant water with a yeast aftertaste), and I will drink small amounts if it makes others around me comfortable, but if given a choice, it's a one-drink-a-month thing for me.

I, personally, drink a couple of beers on the weekend, usually two hours or more apart and usually a light one, although if it's full strength that number rises up to 4 hours. Don't actually want to get drunk, I legitimately like the taste and refreshing nature.

Does anyone find Jackrabbit posting in a thread that has discussed sex provocative? This is all part of some master joke, I'm sure.

Yeah.

Anyway like I said, I think OP's problem is related to the people involved rather than the activities offered. </opinion></rerail>

That's probably the case. Maybe find out what the people you're inviting like to do and try that?

I think that that's more D&D specifically than geeks in general. Drinking beer while playing is actually a persistent (albeit relatively unpervasive) cliche/stereotype of older gamers.

I know where you're coming from though. The people in my last D&D group that I was in came off as drunk even when they were sober (and I actually think a couple of them may have come to some of the sessions high on pot too). Personally, I didn't come to those sessions drunk, but, due to the way we had the games scheduled, I did come there directly from a chemistry class that utilized a lot of diethyl-ether in an old laboratory whose ventilation system was prone to breaking down.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think location can also play into things too. Nobody ever brought alcohol to my college's anime club* (despite a couple of them being extermely fond of sake), but that was due to the fact that we met on campus, combined with the fact that there was a sports bar literally right next-door (the building where we met was right at the edge of the campus) thus making it unnecessary to actually bring alcohol there even if you did want to be there drunk because if you were really that worried about it you could shell out the cash to get a drink at the bar beforehand.

*except for the time when i brought in one of those little single shot bottles of rum
